Water Tanks in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka
An enthralling scene.

The dry zone of Sri Lanka has hundreds of man-made water tanks that store excess water flowing along the rivers in the monsoon. North-East monsoon provides rainfall only for 3-4 months and the rest of the months are dry season for the dry zone. Hence, from history, Sri Lankan used to build giant tanks to irrigate their agricultural lands. The tank is named “Wewa” in Sinhala and it is profoundly involved with the livelihood of villagers in the dry zone. Apart from irrigating the agricultural lands with Tanks, it provides water for sanitation and drinking. It is a very beautiful scene that wild animals including elephants come to the upper part of the tank for drinking water.

The staple foods of Sri Lankan - Rice

The main food of Sri Lankan is rice. Kumbura is the land where farmers cultivate paddy and paddy produce the rice. Sri Lankns used to eat rice for three main meals like breakfast, lunch and the dinner. Paddy fields are in both wet and dry zone of the country. The old and modern irrigation systems in the country water the paddy agricultural lands and some time farmers depend on the monsoon rain. There is a significant culture around the paddy fields. Folklores and poems around the paddy culture have been referring generation to generation. In rural area, farmers use very traditional methods to prepare the land for paddy and to harvest the paddy. The green lands slots paddy fields along the valley are very beautiful scene of the country side. This is a land of paddy in the hill country of Sri Lanka.

British Ceylon (1796–1900)
The British East India Company’s conquest of Sri Lanka, which the British called Ceylon, occurred during the wars of the French Revolution (1792–1801). When the Netherlands came under French control, the British began to move into Sri Lanka from India. The Dutch, after a halfhearted resistance, surrendered the island in 1796. The British had thought the conquest temporary and administered the island from Madras (Chennai) in southern India. The war with France revealed Sri Lanka’s strategic value, however, and the British consequently decided to make their hold on the island permanent. In 1802 Ceylon was made a crown colony, and, by the Treaty of Amiens with France, British possession of maritime Ceylon was confirmed.
