“Life. This morning the sun made me adore it. It had, behind the dripping pine trees, the oriental brightness, orange and crimson, of a living being, a rose and an apple, in the physical and ideal fusion of a true and daily paradise.”

Elephant Trunk Nebula: How big is it?

This is the 10th in a series of posts that I hope you’ll like and find fascinating. In this image I have transposed my own image of the moon in a composite over a photo that I recently captured of IC 1396 and the Elephant Trunk nebula. This scale comparison is extremely accurate in relation to our view from Earth, with all images captured by me at the exact same focal length and with the same camera. Of course this is just apparent size in our sky on Earth, as IC 1396 is absolutely massive at over 100 light years across. More than four Orion nebulas would fit inside it. If you were born on a planet on one side of this nebula in 1920, news of your birth still wouldn’t have reached a planet on the opposite side and wouldn’t reach us here on Earth until the year 4340!

As I said in my first post in this series, the actual purpose I had in capturing my shot of the moon in this way was to image it precisely with the same gear such that I could place it next to images I have taken as a reference point to show “how big” these objects are in our night skies. Since most of the deep sky objects that I take pictures of aren’t visible to the naked eye, it’s hard for me (and most people) to have a clear sense of their scale.

Viewing our Planet from space is a privilige which only a few people have. Fortunately there's the wounderful invention of photography which allows everyone to participate a little bit from this fantastic experience.
In this series of picures obtained from the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit at the NASA Johnson Space Center (https://eol.jsc.nasa.gov) I've combined continuous shot images taken at the . Startrail images are well known at earth and caused by the rotation of earth - it seems that the stars are rotation around the north or south celestion pole. But how does this look when one is flying 400 km above the ground with a speed of nearly 8 km per SECOND - in 90 minutes around the earth?
Is it possible to shoot startrails from space? YES it is! 🙂
When stacking images taken from the ISS one gets a image equal to a single image with long exposure time and so everything at the fast moving earth (with the ISS as reverence point) gets blurred. This also happens to the stars but - as on earth - we get nice trailing stars without any "photoshopping". If you don't believe it - just try it on your own, you'll get the same results I show here :-)
