"Kaudulla National Park" - Polonnaruwa district 🇱🇰 🌳🐆🐘🌳🐘🌳🦩🌳🦋🍁🦜🦚☘️

Opened in 2002, Kaudulla is the newly established national park in the heart of the cultural triangle. Situated around the ancient Kaudulla tank, the park provides a 6656 hectare corridor for elephants between Somawathiya National Park and Minneriya National Park.

Kaudulla National Park offers fantastic chance of getting up close with elephants. In October, there are up to 250 elephants in the park, including herds of juvenile males. There are also leopards, fishing cats, sambar deer, endangered rusty spotted cats and sloth bears.

The park stands on the fringe of the ancient Kaudulla Wewa irrigation tank, 6km off the Habarana–Trincomalee Road at Gal Oya junction. It is visited on a jeep safari from Habarana, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya or Dambulla. As an additional novelty, you may go for catamaran rides on the tank.

The best time to visit Kaudulla National Park is between August and December, with the population of elephants peaking to over 200 in September to October, following the period of the famous elephant gathering at Minneriya National Park. However, the Elephants could be seen in either one of these parks during any time of the year.

Muthurajawela is a marsh in Sri Lanka in the southern region of the Negombo lagoon, 30 km north of Colombo. The Muthurajawela Marshes are 3,068 ha in area and the country's largest saline coastal peat bog. The marsh is notable for its unique and highly diverse ecosystem and is listed as one of 12 priority wetlands in Sri Lanka. Muthurajawela translates to Swamp of Royal Treasure.

The marsh is believed to have originated about 7,000 years ago. In 1996 1,777 ha of the northern part of the Muthurajawela marsh was declared a wetland sanctuary by the government, under the Flora and Fauna Protection Act, in recognition of its vast bio-diversity. "Idalgashinna Railway Station" - Idalgashinna 🇱🇰 🌳🚉🌸🛤️🌲🌻🦋☘️🍁🎢🚂🚂🚂

Located between Haputale and Ohiya railway stations, Idalgashinna Railway Station is often deemed as the most picturesque railway station in Sri Lanka. The station is from the colonial era and was constructed in 1893 when the railway track was extended from Nanu Oya to Haputale. The station is also famous for having 14 tunnels between Ohiya and Idalgashinna, holding the record for the highest number of tunnels between two railway stations in Sri Lanka.

Idalgashinna Station is a tiny station which looks even smaller by the pine-forest covered hill towering behind it. There is only one platform for the whole station, and as soon as you get off the train all you can see are endless green hills with a few scattered buildings which peak through the greenery. The best time to visit the station is in the morning, especially for sunrise, because in the later afternoon/evenings the station is enveloped in a thick cloud of mist. However, despite the restricted view, it is magical watching the mist roll in and cover everything in a blanket of white.

The Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre (known simply as the Nelum Pokuna to most locals), is a major performing arts centre in Colombo. The word Nelum Pokuna means “Lotus Pond”, and the architecture of the building takes direct inspiration from the similarly-named 12th-century lotus pond in Sri Lankan’s ancient city of Polonnaruwa. The building was conceived so that Sri Lanka’s long history of performance and theatre could thrive and performers could have a central location to showcase their talents. It was designed by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, and constructed in Sri Lanka under the guidance of professional local architects.

The Nelum Pokuna was opened in 2011, and has a floor area of approximately 14,000 square meters. There are two main theatres within the structure: an auditorium that is equipped to seat over 1200 people, and an open-air theatre. The front steps to the Nelum Pokuna can also be converted to an open-air theatre on demand. In addition, the building features a library, and modern facilities that allow for the pursuit of educational and research activities.

The Nelum Pokuna is situated in the heart of Colombo, with easy access to the city’s amenities. This has made it a very attractive location for local and foreign producers and visitors, with the theatre being surrounded by five-star hotels, shopping districts and local attractions.

Sri Lanka, being an island, is known for her amazing beaches and views of the sea. However, in Colombo,it isn’t always easy to find a place where you can enjoy the crashing of the waves and most of all, an undisturbed view of the sunset. Galle Face Green thus attracts a large number of people, especially during the evening, although it is rarely empty, even in the afternoon when there is very little shelter from the scorching sun.

Galle Face Green (Galle Face Beach) is a half kilometer promenade in the heart of Colombo and was initially laid out in 1859 by Sir Henry Ward, Governor of British Ceylon. The stretch of land was used for horse racing and golf and was known as the Colpetty Race Course.

Today, Galle Face Green is a favorite place for families, children, lovers and picnickers. While the hot sun makes carrying around an umbrella a must and the crows are a nuisance, it is still a beautiful place to relax, enjoy the beach and have meals. There is enough space to walk around, sit and even fly kites. During the kite season, the skies over Galle Face Green are hidden behind the colorful kites that bring joy to the young and old. Those who enjoy people watching will be able to do a lot of observing at Galle Face Green, as it attracts people of various cultures, ethnicities and ages.

When watching its cool, clear waters ripple in the gentle breeze which blows across the vast expanse of water, no one would believe that there are many more things to feast one’s eyes on, beneath the tranquil waters.

Submerged by the waters of the reservoir are the ruins of many temples and human settlements. In fact, more than 14 tea estates, 57 villages and about 54 ancient temples, among others are said to have gone under water when the reservoir was built.

While many of these places do not exist at present, even underwater, some of them still do. Among these, the ruins of the Kadadora Vihara are spectacular, especially the sculptured statues of the Buddha and other deities. However, they are a rare sight and can only be viewed according to the whims of the weather gods.

" Ceylon Tea" - SriLanka 🇱🇰 🌱🌳🌻🌼🌱🌳🌸🦋🌳🌱🌼🌸🌱

For centuries, Ceylon tea has been known as the finest tea around the world. Tea was first introduced to Sri Lanka by James Taylor in 1867, and the rest, as they say, is history! Ceylon tea consists primarily of black tea, however green tea and other types of tea are also grown.

Although Sri Lanka is a comparatively small country, it has a wide range in elevation, which results in the flavours of tea being produced varying greatly depending on the part of the country they originate from. The main differences in flavour are a result of the climate, soil, sun, precipitation, and plant varietals.

Although there are regional nuances, Ceylon tea is classically known for bold, full and brisk flavour. A majority of Ceylon tea is picked by hand, which makes it a brisk and bright tea.

St Clair's Waterfall" - Hatton 🇱🇰 🦋🌻🌸🌳🏵️🌲🌺🌵🌷🌲🌿

St. Clair’s Waterfall is one of Sri Lanka’s widest waterfalls, and referred to as the “Little Niagra of Sri Lanka”. Although the cascade is just off the Hatton – Talawakele road, it is one of the most picturesque waterfalls as it runs through green hills and lush tea estates. The waterfall got its name from the St. Clair Tea Estate– the tea estate in which it runs through.

The cascade is approximately over 80m in height and 50m in width, and it comprises of two smaller waterfalls: Maha Ella, the greater fall, and Kuda Ella, the lesser fall. The waterfall is easily accessible and is visible from most places, even when you’re passing by train!

There is a lookout point just off the road where you’ll get a view of the gushing cascade and its surrounding greenery. Another option is walking down a small trail to get closer to fall; the trail goes through the wonderful St. Clair Tea Estate, allowing you to get a closer look at the century-old tea bushes as well as the cascade. Even though access to the base of the waterfall is prohibited, it is still an enjoyable walk as you will be encircled by mountains and vegetation while enjoying a great view of St. Clair’s Falls.
