The trail began with a decent path up to ʟᴏᴏʟᴇᴄᴏɴᴅᴇʀᴀ ᴛᴇᴀ ᴇꜱᴛᴀᴛᴇ. From there onwards up to ᴋᴏɴᴅᴀɢᴀʟᴀ ᴘᴇᴀᴋ, the path was steep and rugged, but the thrill of conquering each ridge and rock made it all worthwhile. As I climbed higher, the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape took my breath away. 🌿🌄

Reaching the summit of ᴋᴏɴᴅᴀɢᴀʟᴀ ᴘᴇᴀᴋ was a moment of triumph. The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming as I stood atop the peak, gazing at the world below. The feeling of being on top of the world is truly indescribable! 🙌🗺️

This adventure reminded me of the beauty and power of nature and the importance of pushing our limits to explore the unknown. If you ever get the chance, don't hesitate to hike ʟᴏᴏʟᴇᴄᴏɴᴅᴇʀᴀ ᴛᴇᴀ ᴇꜱᴛᴀᴛᴇ and ᴋᴏɴᴅᴀɢᴀʟᴀ ᴘᴇᴀᴋ. It's a journey of a lifetime! 🌄❤️

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park (Willu-pattu) Located in the Northwest coast lowland dry zone of Sri Lanka.

The unique feature of this park is the existence of “Willus” (Natural lakes) – Natural, sand-rimmed water basins or depressions that fill with rainwater.

The park is located 30 km west Anuradhapura and located 26 km north of Puttalam (approximately 180 km north of Colombo). The park is 131, 693 hectares and ranges from 0 to 152 meters above sea level. Nearly sixty lakes (Willu) and tanks are found spread throughout Wilpattu.

Additionally, the high number of individuals recorded (116 independent individuals and 17 dependents) and a healthy s*x ratio, all recorded during a relatively short study period, is indicative of a healthy breeding population of leopards, and this population should serve as an important source for adjacent protected areas. Apart from Sri Lankan Leopard Wilpattu is one of the best places to spot the Sloth Bear.

41 species of Mammals (4 endemic) have been identified within Wilpattu national park. Mammals that are identified as threatened species living within the Wilpattu National Park are the Sri Lankan Elephant (Elephas maximus), Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus), Sri Lankan Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) and Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, and it spreads through the Districts of Matale and Kandy.

The mountain range takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif. Because of which resembles the knuckles of clenched fist when viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District.

Early British surveyors assigned the the name Knuckles. However, the Sinhalese residents have traditionally referred to the area as Dumbara Kanduvetiya meaning mist-laden mountain range.

Knuckles Mountain Forest Range covering an area of approximately 21,000 hectares. Also a part of the Central Highlands World Heritage site, declared in 2010. Further, it bears the superiority of 35 peaks over 1000 m above sea level. And also 20 peaks over 1500m above sea level. Though it is a part of Central Highlands it is well separated by Mahaweli river valley from South and east. Similarly, by Matale valley from the west.

Knuckles Forest consists of a range of vegetation types that have resulted from diverse climatic and topographic conditions. Among these are the humid tropical lowland semi evergreen forest, tropical sub-montane humid evergreen forest, montane grassland (patana) and pygmy forest.

The complexity brought to the area with vegetation types is further increased by range of landscape modifications by people. Specially, since the British colonization.

Knuckles Mountain Forest Range supports a rich biological diversity. Along with 128 species of birds and 31 mammal species. As well as 20 species of amphibians, 53 species of reptiles, 15 fresh water species. All species are not equally distributed throughout the range. Their distribution depends on multiple factors. Such as food availability, availability of nesting sites etc. that vary with climate, elevation and land cover.
