Annual Pada Yathra (පාද යාත්රා)
Walk from Okada to Katharagama
Introduction
The origins of Paada Yaathra (Foot Pilgrimage) comes from the story of God Kataragama who was the first pilgrim to make this journey on foot when he landed on the shores and walked to Kataragama.
This traditional two month long Paada Yaathra is done all on foot by Hindu Devotees all the way from Jaffna to the sacred Kataragama. Simple and ordinary people brave the scorching sun and the dangers from wild animals as they make this journey seldom knowing when their next meal will come. The diverse culture in Kataragama allows Buddhists, Hindus, Mulsims and Christians and all other religions to practice their faith in the protection of this sacred area.
