'Dondra Head Lighthouse'

It's a lighthouse located on Dondra Head, Dondra, the southernmost point in Sri Lanka.

It's the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka, 160 feet in height.

'Fish Ambul Thiyal'

Fish Ambul Thiyal (Sour Fish Curry) is a traditional fish curry which is originated down south of Sri Lanka ; specially Matara district.

Ambul Thiyal was prepared to preserve fish for a longer period.

This fish curry is fully cooked with Ceylon natural spices (Specially Garcinia & Pepper) which turns outer appearance of the fish curry into black color.

This process gives an extra taste to the curry. It's a dry curry dish.

This is best when eaten with rice. Try the unique taste !

'Polhena Beach'

Polhena Beach is situated in Matara town in the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The Name 'Pol Hena' is derived from the Sinhala word for the Coconut Field.

'Weherahena Poorwarama Rajamaha Viharaya'

It's a very popular temple among the Buddhist pilgrims.

This is the first & largest tunnel temple in the world which is situated in Matara, Sri Lanka.

The most adorable feature found there is the large statue of Lord Buddha in the seated position.

The tunnel is painted with Jataka tales (the previous lives of the Lord Buddha).

'Kandy Esala Perahera'

'Star Fort Matara'

The 'Star Fort' is situated in Matara, Sri Lanka, located on the eastern bank of the river Nilwala, approximately 350 mtrs from the gate to the Matara fort.

It was constructed by the Dutch in year 1765, & was originally called Redoute Van Eck.

Matara become an important city during the Dutch occupation as it was used as a main port for the exportation of cinnamon & elephants.

This Fort was built to an unique shape of an six pointed star with space for 12 large cannons to cover approaches from all directions. The fort was surrounded by an deep moat & was built to hold a small garrison, food supplies and enough ammunition. It also had a two prison cells & a well in the centre to supply water.

'National Museum of Colombo'

This is the largest museum in Sri Lanka. This was built in 1877. It's maintained by the department of National Museum of the central government.

This museum holds contains a collections of much importance to Sri Lanka such as the regalia of the country, including the throne & crown of the Kandyan monarchs as well as many other exhibits telling the story of ancient Sri Lanka.

'Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque'

It's located on Pettah district, one of the oldest parts of the city of Colombo.

This is one of the oldest mosques in Colombo & a popular tourist site in the city.

This striking red & white striped mosque was built in 1908, with 2 floors, a clocktower & a 10,000 capacity. It's one of the architectural wonders of the world.

It is also called as the Red Mosque. Also known as Rathu Palliya in Sinhala, & Samman Kottu Palli in Tamil.

This has been a landmark for sailors approaching the port of Colombo.

'Seema Malakaya'

Seema Malakaya is a beautiful Buddhist temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka which was re designed by the famouse architecture Geoffrey Bawa.

It's situated in the Beira Lake. The temple was originally constructed in the late 19th century.

This is the assembly hall for monks at the Gangaramaya Vihara Buddhist Temple, one of the most famous temples in Sri Lanka. This temple is mainly for meditation & rest, rather than for worshipping.

The reason for its fame is three fold – modern architecture, religious importance & cultural significance. The architecture of the temple is a perfect harmony of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian & Chinese architecture.

'Independence Memorial Hall'

Is a national monument in Sri Lanka built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule with the restoration of full governing responsibility to a Ceylonese-elected legislature on 4th February 1948.

It's located in Independence Square (formerly Torrington Square) in the Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. It also houses the Independence Memorial Museum.

'Gangaramaya Temple'

Gangaramaya Temple is one of the most important temples in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

This temple's architecture demonstrates an eclectic mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian & Chinese architecture. This includes several imposing buildings & is situated not far from the placid waters of Beira Lake.

It has the main features of a Vihara (Temple), the Cetiya (Pagada) the Bodhi Tree, the Vihara Mandiraya, the Seema Malaka (assembly hall for monks) & the Relic Chamber. In addition to those, a museum, a library, a residential hall, a three storeyed Pirivena, educational halls & an alms hall are also on the premises.

Most notable for tourists is the architecture of the Simamalaka Shrine, which was designed by famous Geoffrey Bawa.
