To celebrate Vesak festival, the Sri Lanka government declares Vesak Week. In this season distribute free foods, beverage and some goods called “Dansal” which are organized by various organizations, community, rich peoples etc and anyone can participate this.

At the Vesak poya day night, every home, street, buildings are decorated by Vesak lanterns, bulbs, Buddhist flags and Island will be sparkling, specially Colombo city. The lord Buddha’s previous life stories are display on pandals which are extracted from “550 Jathaka Potha”.

The worldwide Buddhist people celebrate Vesak festival with devotion because of the Lord Gautama Buddha’s birth, Enlightenment and passing-away was happened on Vesak poya day. There are lot of activities to remembers virtues of Buddha on Vesak day. Every temple full fill by devotees to offer beautiful flowers, incense sticks, lighting lamps and listen Daham talks preached by monks. The Buddhist observe five Precepts in normal day and observe eight Precepts in this special day. The monks guide them and teach lord Buddha’s teachings. Call this as “observe sill”. The devotees wear meaningful white dress by indicating the purity of the dharma. These all activities are sacrifice of principle.

All Buddhist devotees, the ultimate goal is to attain the Nibbana, by doing all above activities. The Nibbana which is the absolute comfort in human life and never born again according to Lord Buddha’s teachings.

The second biggest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Its located in Badulla District. This is started by “Poonagala Oya”. The special of this, there is a small upper fall with natural pool on diyaluma fall.
After 6km from Koslanda city which is on A4 road from Beragala to Wellawaya in Badulla district, can be reach to diyaluma fall. The upper fall located by walking distance 30 minutes since here. The waterfall can be seen from Ella town which is famous town for tourism. There are two ways to reach diyaluma since Ella town. From Ella Haputale, you can travel to Beragala junction and use the A4 main road or via Ella-Wellawaya on A4 road can be reached.

SINHALA AND HINDU NEW YEAR

The sri Lankans celebrate their biggest cultural festival every year in month of April. This is the spring season. The farmers harvest the paddy, new leaf grow on the dried trees, the flowers are blooming and everything including environment will be renewed.
There are endemic cultural items in this festival which are called new year customs and rituals. The people do this at a same time by looking a same direction and wearing same color clothes. Those are done according to instructions of Sri Lanka state astrology committee. It is based on sun’s moving from the house of Pisces (Meena Raashi) to the house of Aries (Mesha Raashi), astrologists are creating auspicious times.
Dawn of the new year is beginning with that. Below are some of customs and rituals existing from the ancient time which are carried out by our ancestors since a long period of time.
• Auspicious time (Nonagathaya) – This is interim time of sun between Pisces and Aries. Simply this is not an old or new year. So, we use this time to do charity.
Ex: go to the temple
• Dawn of the new year – The time which is sun arrives on the house of Aries.
• Eating food, do transaction, start working – The very special movement of this festival. All Sri Lankans together as families and do above activities on same time.
