Sri Lanka Tourism has made arrangements for the departure of 18,093 foreign tourists who are currently stranded in the country, says the Tourism Development Authority.

A 24-hour helpline – 117 – was introduced by Sri Lanka Tourism, while a hotline (1912) is in operation for foreign tourists who seek assistance.

The Ministry of Foreign Relations previously stated that the safe departure of foreign tourists who are stranded in the country will be done using both regular flight movements operating through Sri Lanka and also charter flights that may be deployed, as the airport remains open for outbound passenger movements.

As an island-wide curfew was imposed since last Friday (20) departing passengers, as well as the vehicle drivers who would be transporting them, are allowed to use the air ticket in lieu of a curfew pass.

As of March 22, Sri Lanka halted all incoming passenger flights taking into consideration the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and as a means to contain the spread of the virus in the country. The government had stated that this decision will not be eased under any circumstance until the current situation returns to normal.

However, the departure flights from Sri Lanka continued to operate as usual.

*** WHALE WATCHING ***

The ever smiling, mischievous dolphins will put on a show while some of the oldest and the largest sea creatures, the humpback and the blue whales, will nonchalantly glide past you, when you embark on a whale/ dolphin watching excursion off the Southern, Eastern or the West coast of Sri Lanka. The ideal locations for whale watching would be Dondra Point (accessible from Galle, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa) and Trincomalee while the sea off Kalpitiya teems with an abundance of dolphins.

With the whale watching season in Mirissa being in full swing and many local and foreign tourists gathering to the Mirissa harbor, The Sri Lanka Coast Guards had increased their vigilance in monitoring the implementation of Sea Mammals Observation, Regulation and Control Regulations.

To ensure that the Regulations are adhered to by boat operators and tourists engaged in whale watching, the members of the Rohana Coast Guard base had been observing whale and dolphin watching activities in Mirissa since last year. The coast guards also make sure that the boat operators; crew and the tourists abide the safety precautions and regulations before and during their tour of observation.

*** TRAIN RIDE TO ELLA ***

Sometimes there’s no way to get a seat on the slow but oh-so-popular train to Ella, but with a prime standing-room-only spot looking out at a rolling carpet of tea, who cares? Outside, the colourful silk saris of Tamil tea pickers stand out in the sea of green; inside, you may get a shy welcome via a smile. At stations, vendors hustle treats, including some amazing corn and chilli fritters sold wrapped in somebody’s old homework paper. Munching one of these while the scenery creaks past? Sublime

“Welcome to Sri Lanka!” was one of the first greetings I heard in Colombo, the country's bustling big city. A local graced me with those lovely words from across the street. Not a storekeeper, nor a hawker. Just a person who wanted to pass on a warm hello.

*** THE REWARDS OF SLOW TRAVEL ON SRI LANKA'S WATERWAYS ***

ABIGAIL BLASI
Lonely Planet Writer
21 JANUARY 2020

“I’m putt-putting my way along the waters of the Madu River in Sri Lanka, when local boatman Manis points out the highlighter-bright birdlife in the trees. The riverbanks are thick with foliage of banana, cinnamon and balsa trees, and birds aren't the only thing on display; the branches of the balsa being polka-dotted by poisonous lime-green fruit. I look up to see a hawk seemingly pause in mid-air.”

*** STUNNING BEACHES ***

http://www.attrayantlanka.lk/best-experiences-in-sri-lanka/stunning-beaches/

There are long, golden-specked ones, there are dainty ones with soft white sand, there are wind- and wave-battered ones, and ones without a footstep for miles. Some have a slowly, slowly vibe and some have a lively party vibe, but whichever you choose, the beaches of Sri Lanka really are every bit as gorgeous as you’ve heard. In a land where beaches are simply countless, consider the beaches of Tangalla, each with its own personality, and each beguiling in its own way, yet all easily visited in a day.

If you start to feel the burden of the centuries while in Sri Lanka, let ancient history have the opposite effect at one of Sri Lanka’s restorative Ayurvedic spas. Some Ayurvedic treatments date back more than 2500 years and devotees of Ayurveda claim enormous benefits from its treatments. Herbs, spices, oils and more are used on and in the body to produce balance. Some people go on multiweek regimens in clinics; others enjoy a pampering afternoon at a luxury spa. The west coast, particularly around Beruwela, is rife with these treatments.

*** Arugam Bay ***
The heart of Sri Lanka’s growing surf scene, the long right break at the southern end of Arugam Bay is considered Sri Lanka’s best. From April to September you’ll find surfers riding the waves; stragglers catch the random good days as late as November. Throughout the year you can revel in the surfer vibe: there are board-rental and ding-repair joints plus plenty of laid-back cheap hangouts offering a bed or a beer or both. And if you need solitude, there are nearby breaks up and down the coast

***Uda Walawe National Park ***
This huge chunk of savanna grassland centred on the Uda Walawe reservoir is the closest Sri Lanka gets to East Africa. There are herds of buffalo (although some of these are domesticated!), sambar deer, crocodiles, masses of birds, and elephants – and we don’t just mean a few elephants. We mean hundreds of the big-nosed creatures. In fact, we’d go so far to say that for elephants, Uda Walawe is equal to, or even better than, many of the famous East African national parks.
