Kirinda is a small but beautiful village on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, 10 km south of Tissa & close to Kataragama. It has a beautiful beach and a Buddhist shrine built on a huge round rock. The area is also close to the Great and Little Basses reefs which provide some of the most spectacular scuba diving in the country. Kirinda was used as a land base by Arthur C. Clarke's party when diving for the Great Basses wreck (Treasures of the Reef).

One of the most well-known attractions in Kirinda is the statue of Queen Vihara Maha Devi, the heroine of the nation & mother of the hero of the nation, King Dutugamunu. This is situated on the spot where she is said to have landed after being set adrift on the sea from Kelaniya.

Tissa Wewa Rainwater reservoir

North of the modern town lies the beautiful Tissa Wewa, an expansive artificial lake built by King Kavantissa in the 2nd century BC of the ancient southern kingdom of Ruhuna. The shore nearest the town is often busy with crowds of people bathing & flock of aquatic birds including bitterns, herons & egrets skimming across the waters. A beautiful walk leads along the massive bund (embankment) which encloses the lake's southern shore, shaded by a procession of majestic old trees.

Tissa Maha Dagoba (Tissa great stupa)

Most impressive is the restored Maha Stupa, built by King Kavantissa in the 3rd century BC located between Tissa town centre and the tank. It was the largest dagoba in the island at the time. Today, for Buddhist pilgrims, it is one of the sixteen most sacred sites (Solosmasthana) in the country. The dagoba has a circumference of 165m & stands 55.8m high, is enshrined with sacred tooth relic & forehead bone relic of Buddha.
Next to the dagoba is a statue of Queen Vihara Maha Devi, the heroine of the nation & mother of the hero of the nation, King Dutugamunu.

Tissa maha dagaba is exactly 25 minutes drive from Kataragama. Many pilgrims who come to Kataragam do not forget to visit Tissa maha dagaba and worship.

History of kataragama

According to the Hindu mythology this area is supposed to be the abode of God Skanda and his Goddess Valli. God Skanda had come to Sri Lanka from S. India where he was known as Subramania. The people of India were not paying homage to him since he was rather playful. Therefore, he had decided to take up his abode in Kalutara (Chelapura) in Sri Lanka.

Where God Skanda’s brother God Ganesha wanted to scare Valli it was Skanda who rescued her, at Sella Kataragama which is also known as Small Kataragama Sella Kataragama is a beautiful spot situated about 6 km’s away from Kataragama on the banks of the Menik Ganga.

Many newly married couples go to visit Sella Kataragama. Some devotees do the pilgrimage on foot walking about 200 km’s. God Skanda had taken Valli and gone with her to the hill called Wedisiti Kanda.

The ritual of planting KAP:
Kap situweema can be mentioned as the first ritual of the annual Kataragama Esala Festival
This is a ritual of the by gone days of King Dutu Gemunu and it is conducted in a perahera (Procession) by the Kapu Ralas (the custodians of the Devalaya) and planted at a place situated in the Kataragama Dewala premises. The Maha Perahera is started 45 days after Kap Situweema

Fire Walking:
The fire walking ceremony place on the 13th day of the annual Kataragama festival Devotees abstain from eating meats to participate in the perahera and walk on the fire to see whether they have received the blessings of the God.

Paying homage by indigenous people to God Kataragama
It is said that goddess Valli Amma has descended from the Vedda generations. To symbolize this fact they come armed with bows and arrows and participate in the perahera giving protection to it.

Sithulpawwa rock temple is historically significant and identified as one of the greatest 2nd century sites of Buddhist scholarship. With a history of over 2200 years, this is an ancient place of worship in the Hambantota district. The modern name Sithulpawwa is derived from the ancient ‘Cittalpabbata’, ‘The hill of the quiet mind’. It is said that in the 1st century AD as many as 12,000 Arahants lived here (monks that have achieved the highest mind level in Buddhism).

Unlike the great monasteries in Anuradhapura and other towns, life at Sithulpawwa was hard and a monk or nun lived there only if they were interested in silence and solitude. Located opposite the Maha Sithulpawwa rock which is 400 feet (122M) in height is a cave temple. This cave temple, which is 67 feet high and 30 feet long, is part of the intricate cave-complex at Sithulpawwa.

Sithulpawwa rajamaha viharaya is 18km away from kataragama. This is just an hour drive from our hotel to the rock temple.

Kiriwehera attract Buddhist pilgrims from around the world, this gleams in pure white from a distance. Built by king Mahasena, it is believed that the sword that Prince Siddhartha cut off his hair with is deposited within this stupa. Sitting on a platform of 10 feet square and 10 feet high, the stupa itself is a massive 95ft high.

Be sure to buy some of the beautiful water lillies made available on either side of the road leading to the stupa to offer gratitude to the many Buddha images placed within it.
