The mountains in Sri Lanka can be found in Southern Central Sri Lanka. The area is of an outstanding beauty and gifted with a variety of landscapes. The highlands stretch from the Knuckles Mountains, east of Kandy down to the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, north of Rathnapura. In the south east the plateau ends abruptly at an abyss of one kilometer.

It’s a famous tourist spot, called World’s End. The slopes of the hills around Hatton, Nuwara Eliya and Bandarawela are carpeted with scenic tea estates and vegetable gardens which offer an unusual panorama, especially for foreigners who are not acquainted with this kind of scenery. The area is full of waterfalls.

In 2010 the United Nations have declared large parts of the Central Highlands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Knuckles Conservation Forest, the Horton Plains National Park and the Peak Wilderness Protected Area (which includes the Adam’s Peak, locally called Sri Pada).

Tourism Fest To Dazzle Colombo
With the festive season just around the corner elaborate plans are being made to transform the city of Colombo in to a Tourism Wonderland from the 20th to the 23rd of December this year.
Sri Lanka Tourism under the guidance of the Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs is planning the second edition of Tourism Fest which took the city by storm last December. The idea behind this unique event is to portray Sri Lankan food, culture, gems, handicrafts, tea, shopping and entertainment at one venue during the height of the tourist season. According to sources at Sri Lanka Tourism, this year’s Tourism Fest will be a bigger and better version of last year.
Tourism Fest 2016 will be declared open by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister of Tourism Development, Christian Religious Affairs and Lands, John Amaratunga on December 20th while President Maithripala Sirisena will preside at the closing ceremony on December 23rd at the Independence Arcade in Colombo, which is the venue for the four-day event. A host of VIPs and diplomatic community are expected to visit the Fest during the four-day event.
Tourism Fest is a concept of Tourism Development Minister, John Amaratunga who having realized the absence of any organized tourism related event during the festive season when city hotels are filled with foreign tourists, decided to organize a multi-day event bringing together all tourism stake holders. The event is complemented with nonstop entertainment by armed forces bands, choral groups and cultural shows providing both local and foreign tourists a memorable experience.
Meanwhile in order to enliven the ambience in the city, the Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs has requested the corporate sector to light up their buildings during the festive season. As a result, Colombo is expected to dazzle during Tourism Fest 2016 creating a lively atmosphere that will rival the trendiest cities in this part of the world.
“My intention is to organize calendar based events so that visitors to the country will know that there is plenty of entertainment during their visit. I have heard many tourists complaining that there is not much to do when the sun sets in the city. Events of this nature will provide much needed entertainment for tourists while also promoting our tourist attractions,” said Minister John Amaratunga explaining the rationale for Tourism Fest 2016.
Among the entertainment acts billed to perform during the 4-day fest are the Army, Air force and Police Bands, various choirs singing Christmas Carols, groups conducting Nativity Plays and various cultural shows. A Fireworks Display is set to dazzle the environs of Independence Square while a special kiddies’ entertainment area will keep the youngsters thoroughly entertained while the adults grab bargains at the shopping bazaar featuring some of the best known global brands.
To add spice to the proceedings, Tourism Fest will feature food and beverage stalls by leading hotels and restaurants in Colombo with live demonstrations of different cuisines giving visitors an opportunity to learn and experience the culinary aspects of Sri Lanka. The international cuisine on offer will include Mongolian, Arabic, Chinese, Malaysian, Thai, Korean, Italian, Indian, Japanese, Indonesian and specialty desserts at a nominal rate. In addition, the Sri Lanka Tea Board will feature a tea tasting center with a display of the many varieties of tea available in the island.
One of the main attractions for tourists will be an exposition of Sri Lankan culture and heritage presented by Central Cultural Fund showcasing photographs, artifact replicas and books. The Gem & Jewellery Authority will also be organizing an exhibition on Sri Lankan gems with a sales outlet as well. The Zoological Department and the Department of Wild life will have exhibitions on the wild life and zoological gardens of Sri Lanka. It will be a unique experience for those interested in wild life.
A special double decker shuttle bus service organized by ‘Colombo City Tour’ will be available from selected Colombo hotels daily to and from the venue with live carols onboard.
Tourism Fest 2016 will create a Sri Lankan sense of celebration and spread the spirit of the season among locals, tourists, the diplomatic and expat communities while providing a unique platform for tourism promotion.

Pandit W.D Amaradewa was such a great singer in Sri Lanka that almost all Sri Lankans love listening to his music.

He has contributed a lot to develop Sinhalese tradition music. He was quite unique that he had his own style of Sinhalese music which was followed by many younger artists.

To be mentioned that he is also the one who created Nation Anthem of Maldives

27 September is World Tourism Day!
Tourism for All!

Accessible Tourism for all is about the creation of environments that can cater for the needs of all of us, whether we are traveling or staying at home. May that be due to a disability, even temporary, families with small children, or the ageing population, at some point in our lives, sooner or later, we all benefit of universal accessibility in tourism.

Which is why, we want to call upon the right for all of the world’s citizens to experience the incredible diversity of our planet and the beauty of the world we live in. On this year’s World Tourism Day help us spread the word of both the importance and immense benefits universal accessibility has and can bring to society at large.

Ever since its inception, World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27 September to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. As the official day set aside in the United Nations Calendar the celebration seeks to highlight tourisms potential to contribute to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing some of the most pressing challenges society is faced with today.

Did you know?

In the month of September, you can see the largest elephant gathering of Asian elephants in the world taking place in Minneriya, Sri Lanka.

When most of the eastern part of Sri Lanka get dry, they have no food there so the elephants come and gather in the Minneriya lake to eat good food (fresh grass, they love it).

If you travel to Minneriya in the right time, of course you will have the chance to see a gathering of over 100 elephants.

So we travel to Minneriya to see this special occasion as in the photos below.

Tsui Yan Ting Jennifer: is a Hongkong Chinese world renowned artist, a graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing and famous for her beguiling and luxurious flower paintings on traditional calligraphy paper. She is the only female Chinese artist to be given her own exhibition at the United Nations Headquarters, New York in September & October 2007.

A long held dream of Jennifer’s was to visit Sri Lanka to perform some charitable works. In 1996 she came to this ‘pearl’ of an island for the first time. She focused mainly on the Cultural Triangle and in four weeks was totally besotted with this magical isle. While working on her art back in China, she never forgot Sri Lanka & promised to return one day, which she eventually managed in May 2010, bringing her daughter Helen with her. Her idea was to find a suitable location to be able to paint and display her art while encouraging young local artists by conducting ‘Master classes’ and developing their techniques

This concept soon changed to an even more challenging proposition when Helen suggested that they incorporate the original idea with running a small luxury hotel in Colombo, where she would oversee the running of it. After several months and visits, an exclusive property in Colombo 7 was decided upon and hence, 19 months after the seeds of an idea were sown, the Zylan Luxury Villa has come into fruition.

The cool, elegant property is decorated in charmingly understated soft hues of coffee and cream which accentuates the vibrancy and colours of Jennifer’s art which adorns the walls of the public rooms as well as the eight Deluxe bedrooms and the two luxuriously appointed Executive rooms.
