Heavy rains wreak havoc in Sri Lanka, streets flooded in Colombo

Sept 24, Colombo: Heavy rains lashing Sri Lanka have inundated many parts in the country including the streets in the capital city of Colombo disrupting traffic and bringing misery to motorists.

Number of roads in Colombo including some areas of Baseline Road, Armour Street Opposite of the Jethawana Temple, Barber Street St. Jame's Street, Bloumendhal Road in Kotahena, Jinthupitiya Junction along the Reclamation Road in Fort, road opposite the Kirulapone Police Station, High-Level Road, and roads around Robert Gunawardena Junction are inundated causing heavy traffic disruption.

Meanwhile exit roads of Southern Expressway at Welipenna and Kokmaduwa exchanges have been flooded and the Road Development Authority has advised drivers to use alternative roads.

Motorists traveling from Mathugama to Kottawa can proceed without a problem. However motorists proceeding towards Aluthgama are advised not to use Welipenna entrance instead use Dodangoda entrance.

Vehicles traveling from Matara to Colombo can travel to Matugama using the Kurundugahahathepma or Dodamgoda exit without using the Welipenna exit.

The Road Development Authority meanwhile advised motorists using expressways to switch on headlights when travelling in the heavy rain and drive at a controlled speed (60kmph) to avoid accidents. However, no accidents have been reported as yet.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department warned that the prevailing showery condition over the island is expected to continue until 25th night. Showers or thundershowers will occur over most parts of the island, it said.

Very heavy falls above 200 mm are likely at some places in Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces. Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in North-western, Northern, Uva and Eastern provinces.
