On 06th June 2024, I guided an enthusiastic group of hikers starting from Makulella. Stage 15 of The Pekoe Trail begins in Makulella, at the serene Allimale Bodhiya Temple, which overlooks the picturesque Ambagaswatte valley. The valley's river flows into the magnificent Ravana Falls, named after the legendary King Ravana from the Ramayana. It's said that King Ravana hid Princess Sita in a cave behind this very waterfall.
The trail starts with a delightful walk through a forested area, where it splits into two paths. Taking the right path leads to the Ambagaswatte valley, while the straight path heads through a eucalyptus forest. The trail splits again further ahead, and the correct route is the right track through tea bushes, offering stunning views. After penetrating a patch of jungle, the trail emerges onto a wider path, turning left towards the eucalyptus forest again. This part of the trail leads straight to the top of Ella Rock.
The second half of this stage, marked by the peaceful and serene Ella Rock, provides breathtaking views of the valley below, Little Adam's Peak, and the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail then mirrors the popular route used by travelers staying in Ella to climb up to the rock as a day trip. A steep descent follows, first through the eucalyptus forest and then past local homes, leading all the way to Kithal Ella Station.
From Kithal Ella Station, there's no option but to walk along the railway track for a bit, where merchants often sell snacks and fresh fruit. The stage finishes at the Ella Train Station, the 75th station on the Main Line. Ella is a beloved hill-country town where travelers come to enjoy walks through tea plantations and nature.
Join us on Stage 15 for a journey through history, lush landscapes, and stunning vistas that will leave you in awe.
