Dear Friends and Family,

It is with a heavy heart that I officially announce the closing of tour operator and destination management service provider, Barefoot Liberia, operating in Monrovia since 2008.

It was an honor participating in an industry that is ripe for success and still promises great things for Liberia. I would like to express an immense gratitude to this country and the community for the wonderful 6 years I spent in Liberia. The overpowering beauty of the landscape is only comparable to the beauty within the hearts of the Liberian people.

Today, tourism is once again opening it's window of opportunity and there are new players ready to help drive the industry:

Former head tour guide of Barefoot Liberia, expert bush traveler, and fixer extraordinaire James (Jimmy) Korkolie is on ground and available for tours in Monrovia and across Liberia. He can be reached at [email protected], or by phone at +231 (0) 886 529 113 or +231 (0) 776 968 322

Jimmy is an excellent guide for day trips and week long upcountry travel. He knows the whole country including some of the deepest parts of the Liberian rain forest, speaks several Liberian dialects, is an incredible problem solver, and is the perfect liaison with local communities. Jimmy is also available for logistical fixing services for events and daily activities in Monrovia.

Chiquita Johnson is running her own tour company, West Tourism Management, based in Monrovia. Check out her website at www.west-tourism.com . She can be reached at [email protected] or by phone on: +231 (0) 886 266 027 / +231 (0) 770 479 254

And of course, Barefoot Joe is still offering fishing trips and adventures out on the St. Paul river! +231 (0) 888 196 891

I hope each and every one of you has the opportunity to travel through Liberia's gems. My favorite trip was to East Nimba Nature Reserve with Jimmy; which included Mount Nimba with views over Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire and endless deep rain forest hikes to mystical waterfalls! Check out photos from our trip here.

Lots of Love Liberia and hope to see you again soon o!

The president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, then held a moment of silence for those who had died. She thanked who had fought and expressed her gratitude to the country’s international partners and others around the world “whose hearts were with us.” Ms. Johnson Sirleaf added, “Let us celebrate, but stay mindful and vigilant.”

The announcement Saturday made Liberia the first of the hardest-hit West African countries, including Guinea and Sierra Leone, to bring a formal end to the epidemic.

Powerful words on the humanity of this awful epidemic

The first person to die from Ebola Virus Disease on U.S. soil was Thomas Eric Duncan. Mr. Duncan flew from Liberia to Dallas, Texas in good health. He was headed to rekindle his long-lost love, with whom he had a son. They had plans to marry and live as a family; three of them, happily ever after.

VERY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS! PLEASE SHARE!!!

The United 4 West Africa (U4WA) campaign has been established by key members of the tourism industry working in the region who are concerned not only with the immediate negative impacts of the Ebola outbreak, but also its long term impacts, which have the potential to cause considerable damage to the economy, culture and livelihoods.

U4WA is a call to action to the tourism industry, the arts, and passionate individuals to fundraise and pledge a commitment to continue sharing the story of West Africa’s beautiful land, culture and people with an emphasis on the most affected countries - Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, now and post-Ebola.

U4WA will raise funds, in part, for Médicins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) who are leading the way in saving lives on the ground.

U4WA will also raise funds for a group of hand-selected grass roots non-profit organizations that have been identified as leaders in community awareness, education and health services in the regions’ most in need.

Through social media, concerts and events geared at sharing the beauty of West Africa, U4WA will raise funds for the fight against Ebola and encourage a more positive story of West Africa; one of hope, fascinating cultures, and breathtaking landscapes. We want to remind the world that West African countries are known for being friendly, beautiful, exciting and colourful places where hospitality and the arts rule, and where adventure and cultural experiences lay around every corner.

Dear Friends, this past weekend our head tour guide, Jimmy Korkolie lost three of his family members to . Jimmy had not been in physical contact with them recently and is safe. No one in Jimmy and Catherine's community has been affected, and from what we know, no one from our Barefoot Liberia teams has contracted Ebola. Living conditions have become unimaginably difficult. If you'd like to reach out to any of our team members please message us and we'll share their contact details or send them the message. If you'd like to know how to help we highly recommend donating to Partners In Health or send money directly to those that are living in . Employment is scarce and food prices are rising.

Partners In Health is a global health organization relentlessly committed to improving the health of poor & marginalized people.
