SOME FACTS ABOUT LIBERIA
1. Liberia is a home to one of Africa's richest ecosystems; the Sapo National Park is a national wonder on earth.
2. There are sixteen tribes in Liberia, namely Bassa, Kissi, Gbandi, Kru, Belleh, Mandingo, Vai, Krahn, Lorma, Gola, Mende, Grebo, Dey, Dan, Kpelle and Mano.
3. There are fifteen subdivisions or counties in Liberia, namely Bomi, B**g, Gbarpolu, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Grand Gedeh, Grand Kru, Lofa, Margibi, Maryland, Montserrado, Nimba, Rivercess, RiverGee and Sinoe.
4. Liberia is bordered by three countries and an ocean - on the North by Guinea, East by Ivory Coast, West by Sierra Leone and South by the Atlantic Ocean.
5. Liberia produced the first Female Head of State - Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
6. It took the United States of America fifteen (15) years to recognize Liberia's Independence on September 23, 1862.
7. It is recorded in history that during the 1950s Liberia managed to have had the world's second economic growth.
8. Liberia holds the Guinness World Record for the most fraudulent election ever reported in history, the 1927 election. During the 1927 general elections in Liberia, Charles DB King beat his opponent Thomas Faulkner to the presidency, receiving 243,000 votes compared Faulkner’s 9,000, despite there being less than 15,000 registered voters in the country.
9. Liberia has only one major airport - The Robert International Airport in Margibi County.
10. Liberia was founded in 1821 by a philanthropic institution, The American Colonization Society, from the United States of America.
11. Liberia is a home to Africa's greatest soccer player - George Oppong Manneh Weah; the only African to have won the Ballon D'or in 1995.
12. Liberia is Africa's largest producer of natural rubber.
13. English is the official language spoken in Liberia.
14. There are two most important religions in Liberia, namely Christianity and Islam.
