The 1st of November marks All Saints’ Day, one of the most magical and superstitious 24 hours in the Lithuanian calendar. Rows of people, all day and night make their way to the cemeteries to visit their departed friends and family.
It’s a day of remembrance, togetherness, and reflexion.

All Saint’s Day always brings everyone together. Aunties and cousins you haven’t seen in forever, friends who moved away, everybody comes home. After lighting the candles, saying grace and stomping around in the cold Lithuanians always ends up at grandparent's house, closest to the cemetery, for a chat and a cup of tea.

All Saint’s Day in Lithuania is a rather elaborate event and also a national holiday. As many old traditions in Lithuania, this one springs from the pagan days as well and in years past All Saints’ Day was celebrated for days even for weeks with special rituals.

Even in the 1900’s it was believed, that on this day, souls come back to earth and gather in the churches and graveyards. Therefore, families would feast right on the graves of the dead and leave the leftovers out overnight.

A vivid memory creeps into each young people minds as the day approaches. At the grandparent's house, a table set elaborately with food and drinks for many more people than there were present in the house. Around the table, a number of empty plates set, ‘for the souls’, the grandma explains.

This was a tradition amongst the older generation, inviting the souls of the deceased for a hearty feast amongst the living. The table was set on the eve of All Saint’s Day and after dinner, the table was left as it is overnight so the souls could feast all night long.

The feasts have vanished with time, but the belief remains. Every year on All Saints’ Day the graveyards all over Lithuania transform into a mystical glowing burial ground filled with thousands and thousand of flickering candles.

It’s a spectacular sight to behold, whatever you believe!

Riga trip | The Backpackers Lt

Imagine you find yourself feeling as if you traveled back in time. It feels as if it were not the XXI. Imagine. You are sitting on a bench, in front of a massive wooden table situated in the cellar of a castle. Surrounded by a number of people dressed in clothes far from modern, in clothes reflecting the national tradition. Some of them are playing music with unique instruments, dancing, singing, and chatting. Everyone is friendly, happy and delighted. People share and taste traditional cheese and bread, and savor the traditional beer. One of them comes, smiles at you and invites you to try the food and drinks. Another one comes and invites you to dance. The others move next to you in a rhythm of a fun song and encourage you to sing along. And you do it! You sing (in a Lithuanian dialect as if you knew it), you dance, you find yourself having a great time and start asking yourself - ”where am I?”. I know where you are - you are at the Biržai castle located in the northern Lithuanian town of Biržai. Would you like to experience all of this for real?

Pub-crawl in Krakow is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. It was the first time for me that I was welcomed in a bar with an always different bottle of shots. They propose you to get a shot directly from the bottle, I never saw that before, WoW.
Later, we were dancing in the first bar and enjoying the music, and suddenly someone removed his belt and we started to play Limbo. We transformed the dancefloor to a real show and to a dance competition. All the people, even those who were not with our group, joined. It was one of my funniest and craziest moment of this trip :D !!

Hello, our backpacker Sarah and her boyfriend Costello are about to start the project KissesFromEarth, a documentary AGAINST RACISM. With that, they hope to give every person the opportunity to challenge their perceptions of people from different countries instead of following pre-fabricated prejudices. For a better world with equality and without racism.

Since they're only two poor, creative and social persons and such a project certainly cost money they'll try to get the funds for it on the crowdfunding website 'Kickstarter'. This is where we come in!

To raise awareness for that project they depend on any help they can get and that's why The Backpackers Lt would like to ask you to support them by donating or/and advertising the project. Please hand out the flyer to your family, friends, and colleagues and post it on all social media platforms. You can pretty much do anything you can think of to reach as many people as possible. Everyone who supports then financially will receive the film before the official publication and will find his/ her name on their website. One of the most amazing stories about our Erasmus trip is about "A thousand miles - Vanessa Carlton". We were in the bus talking stupid stuff as usual then we remembered about this part in the movie "White Chicks" when Terry Crews start singing this song, we decided to do the same. It was so funny because it's the kind of songs, people don't expect you to like. We sang it so many times this weekend, at the end of the trip it was our Erasmus Anthem, we sang it all the semester and we learned all the lyrics. This song always brings good memories back.
