Today is the begining of Sukkot.
this house in the center of Lithuania, Kedainiai still kept an approx 200 years old sukkah shelter attached to it.
Long time ago October, when usually falls Sukkot, was a cold month here and shelters were build properly, with the only distinguishing feature - the roof was removable.

The street and a house of The Gaon of Vilnius, and today it's his birthday 🎉

🧐 Elijah ben Solomon Zalman, known as the Vilna Gaon, lived in Vilnius in the 18th century. He is considered to be a great Lithuanian Rabbi, a Litvak religious leader and the most prominent Litvak cultural representative.
But these are just pure facts.

Actually Gaon means genius and he was the🥇

⁉️Did you know that he is the one that made major corrections in present Talmud? no - he did not invent anything, but during ages while rewriting Talmud there have been some mistakes made and The Gaon of Vilnius found and corrected them. And for the nowadays version we have to thank him.

⁉️Did you know that he was the one who scolded chasidic Jews for now studying and waiting for inspiration?

⁉️Did you know that he worked so hard that in order not to fall asleep he was working on Talmud corrections with his feet in ice water?

Danielius Dolskis Vilnius born Jewish singer spend many years in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev and even Berlin, but visiting Kaunas (Kovno) once he realised that the city which became capital of Lithuania n 1920 is vibrant, locals love to go out and yet the cultural life is still very poor.
Moving to Kaunas in 1929 he filled an empty place of chanson singer. Soon Daniel Dolski became extremely popular, learned Lithuanian language and translated into it most popular foreign songs!
Unfortunately the beau monde of Kaunas lost this star very soon - after one show he drank a glass of very cold beer, got pneumonia and died in 1931

This banner if for Subate, a tiny Shtetl on the border of Lithuania and Latvia, that once used to have a big Jewish community and now the descendants of this community take care of the old Jewish cemetery.

See this wooden attachment to the house? Hard to believe but this is a Sukkot shelter. Autumn can be cold in Lithuania (Lita), so in the earlier days people used to built warmer S**a shelters - this one in Kedainiai (Keidan) is dated back to the beginning of 1800s.
