Our relatively brief experience indicates that to truly immerse yourself in a laid-back vibe, a visit to some islands is essential. Choosing Cozumel proved to be the right decision, especially given its status as a top destination for snorkeling. Tulum left us with mixed feelings, so we had no high expectations. However, after a 40-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, we were warmly welcomed with smiles and kindness.
Clean, tidy, colorful, and perfectly divided into blocks, Cozumel greeted us with a slightly windy weather. Nevertheless, it didn't deter us from enjoying the town and a delicious dinner with mega margaritas.
The next morning, the decision between a buggy or two scooters (we couldn't fit on one anymore) took some time, but we were glad the buggy won. With the wind tousling our hair and smiles all around, the buggy proved to be a fantastic option for exploring the island. We cruised around, searching for the perfect spot, and found it with a huge bonus: turquoise water, free loungers, and a bar offering cold drinks. The rest of the day was spent at Playa Bonita, where we enjoyed being slapped by huge waves. Salty and tired but still happy, we returned to the hotel with our blue buggy. Can you imagine a better day? Perhaps, only if it ends with an amazing dinner and three margaritas (one of which is just a pizza).
The third day started with the same news – the port was still closed due to the wind. Without much debate, as Adomas stated: to the beach! We already knew a perfect spot with calm water (how can such a small island have such different weather?). More salted skin for today. By the time we returned, the wind had gone, promising not only a lovely walk across touristy streets or an end-of-the-day ocean-view balcony but, most importantly (fingers crossed), a snorkeling tour the next morning.
Finally, we got what we came for. Funny guides, loud music, and great company. Our yellow boat soared over the waves, and after some time, we marveled at a mesmerizing reef, turtles, starfish, and friendly (?) rays floating around us. Oh, and fantastic guacamole (trust us, we know what it means as there was no day without it) and cold beer rejuvenated our tired bodies.
That's a wrap. Cozumel offered everything we desired: great beaches, blue waters, and amazing food. Moreover, you can find excellent roads, charming towns, and super-friendly locals here. Even without spending time in bee sanctuaries, tequila tours, or Mayan ruins, we felt that the island was 100% worth the visit.
