For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own. — 1 Samuel 12:22

Thought

The great and holy God will not be unfaithful. He will act to show his character and honor his holy name, even when we, his people, don't deserve his grace. Why God would love and preserve us and our great Israelite ancestors is nothing short of grace, love, and faithfulness. Why would the Father send the Son to live among us, die on the cross, and raise him back to life to defeat death? Because of his grace, love, and faithfulness. If God did this in the past, how much more will he not display his grace, love, and faithfulness in the days and years to come?!

Prayer

Holy and Righteous Father, your grace has not only saved me but also sustains me even when the evil one tries to use my personal failures to make me doubt your love for me. Thank you for triumphing over my unworthiness and blessing me your righteousness so that I will be fit for your kingdom and glory. I praise you in Jesus' name, the name of the Son who is full of grace, abounding in love, and enduring in faithfulness. Amen.

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. — Romans 12:21

Thought

A friend used to remind me that the number one goal in dealing with difficult people or circumstances is this: "Don't become what you hate." He wasn't talking about hating the person, but he meant that we don't want to become evil, wicked, petty, and sinful in our actions and motivations the things we hate about their behaviors. We don't overcome the devil by underhanded and dishonorable means. We overcome evil and drive it back into the abyss of hell with the evil one by doing what is right and filling our hearts and lives with goodness (Philippians 4:). There is no greater example of overcoming evil with good than Jesus. And the Spirit is working with us to transform us to become like Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18), whom we love and desire to emulate.

Prayer

Holy God, please bless us with your holy character as we resist those who are critical, cynical, and vengeful toward us because we are followers of Jesus. Please help us respond to our critics in ways reflecting Christ's character and Lordship. In his name, the name of Jesus, we ask this. Amen.

Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. — Proverbs 12:19

Thought

"Tell the truth the first time, then you won't have to remember what you said." This truism by the famous Speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn, is good medicine for us today. Telling a lie seems gratifying at the time, but it nearly always catches up with us and gives us the added burden of trying to remember what we said and why. Truth endures; a lie is a momentary illusion that ends up in a trap filled with burdens.

Prayer

Holy and Righteous Father, please forgive me for lying, exaggerating, and withholding the truth when the truth needs to be told. I yearn for my heart and my lips to be invested in forever — your forever — so please help me as I seek to tell the truth with holy integrity. In the name of Jesus, I ask for your help. Amen.

But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. — 1 Corinthians 12:18-20

Thought

The Apostle Paul reminds us that God assigns our roles in the Body of Christ. Several principles interact with God's choice:

First, be faithful in what God has given us to do until we are faithful in and with little things, he will not entrust us with big ones (Luke 16:10-13).
Second, if we don't use what he has given us, it will be taken away from us (Matt. 25:14-30).
Third, we reap what we sow sinful or irresponsible behavior can create consequences that limit the effectiveness of our service, ministry, and use of our gifts (Galatians 6:7-8).

Bottom line: Let's be faithful to what God has given us. Let's serve him when given new opportunities using the gifts he has blessed us with and the opportunities he places before us. Let's honor him with our choices so that Satan cannot use our failure to interfere with our service to others and our faithfulness to the Lord!

Prayer

Dear Father and Lord of heaven and earth, please help me see my opportunities to serve in your Kingdom using the gifts you have given me. Please grow my effectiveness in your service so that I can bring you glory and bless others. In Jesus' name, I thank you and pray this. Amen.

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. — Romans 12:17-18

Thought

REDEMPTIVELY That's how Jesus lived! He sought to make a difference in the lives of everyone he met friends, sinners, and adversaries. His goal wasn't getting even, getting what was rightfully his, or even winning the arguments he had. Jesus focused on interacting with people redemptively. His mission was to leave them more blessed than where he first found them. The apostle Paul lived with the same goal. He could say, "I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some" (1 Corinthians 9:22). In our passage today, he challenges us to do the same!

Prayer

Forgive me, O God, for the grudges I've harbored and the evil things I've thought about others. Help me to see others and value them as Jesus does- how he valued them when he ministered to them while on earth. Please use me to be a redemptive influence on all my life touches. In the name of the Lord Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. — Romans 12:16

Thought

"Don't be conceited!" That's a command for someone else, right? I don't think I've ever met someone who genuinely felt they were conceited. But, when looking for someone we want to associate with, we seldom look for someone ignored by the crowd, forgotten by the pretty people, and easily overlooked by others. We want to "hang around with" those who are important, loved on social media, recognized as superstars, known as successful athletes, or beloved entertainers. We believe we deserve to be noticed and valued, too. Oops, I guess that's why Paul wrote this command for us. Remember who Jesus associated with. Remember what his brother, James, said about not showing favoritism or bias because people are considered "less than" (James 2:1-13). Jesus wants his church to have many different kinds of people because harmony only happens when people sing different notes in tune!

Prayer

Father, thank you for making me in your image, designed personally by you to do something to bring you glory. At the same time, Father, I don't want to be a snob, thinking too much of myself and my importance. Please help me see those with whom you want me to associate with. Help me love people as Jesus did! In his name, I pray. Amen.

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. — Romans 12:15

Thought

While misery may love company, grief can lead many of us to withdraw and hide. So, let's remember those who have lost loved ones, especially this time of year. Let them know how you value and miss their loved ones, too. As you talk about their loved ones, please mention them by name. Don't feel like you need to explain the why behind their death or give advice to the grieving remember, Job's counselors were a blessing until they started talking, trying to defend God and explain why Job was suffering. Love serves, encourages, and waits; so, serve, encourage, and wait. Do it with both the grieving and the rejoicing people in your fellowship. Make this a season of true joy and comfort. Affirm their grief while sharing their laughs and rejoicing with them in their good surprises. They need to know it is ok to have moments of joy in their sadness. Also, dear friend in Jesus, make sure you are around people full of joy and rejoice with them, too! It's hard to serve if you don't rejoice.

Prayer

Holy God and comforting Father, please give us eyes to see and hearts to offer loving care to those around us who are grieving. During this special time of year, please use us to bless those in sorrow and help us as we join those who are rejoicing. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our source of comfort and joy. Amen.

Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. — 1 Corinthians 12:14

Thought

The human body is an amazing arrangement of parts, members, vital organs, systems, and interdependent structures. When the body is healthy, these many different organic structures and systems work together, and the human body can do amazing things. The same is true with the Body of Christ! As long as we each do our part and offer our gifts and abilities for the good of the whole, Christ can do amazing things through us! Both the Body as a whole, functioning as the presence of Christ, and each structure and system and part working as it is gifted to do are essential and interdependent. You, in your role, using your giftedness and fulfilling your purpose, are essential if we, the Body of Christ as a whole, are going to be able to serve the world as Jesus' presence among people he longs to seek, serve, and save!

Prayer

Holy and loving Father, please help us each know our place and purpose in the Body of Christ so we can serve faithfully and productively to seek, serve, and save those in the world who need to know your Son's grace and so we can bring glory to you, dear Father. May the Holy Spirit guide us as we use the giftedness the Spirit gave us, we pray. Amen.

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. — 1 Corinthians 12:13

Thought

Do you know what makes us family? In God's family, the Holy Spirit makes us one. We are made a child of God by our new birth into his forever family by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is God's presence and power in us and God's spiritual DNA that connects us to each other and to our Father. This spiritual bond transcends human family, race, nationality, gender, and all other human barriers. The Spirit's presence ensures we are God's children and enables us to function as Jesus' Body here on earth.

Prayer

Thank you, dear Father. Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for making my body a holy dwelling for your presence through the Holy Spirit. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for pouring out the Spirit on me and making me new. I ask, dear Father, that the blessed Holy Spirit continue to work in my heart to tear down any wall of prejudice that may exist toward any of my brothers and sisters in Christ. I pray that the Holy Spirit makes us one here on earth, just as the reality of our oneness is true with you in heaven. I pray this in the one who died to make us one in him. Amen.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. — Romans 12:12

Thought

How can we keep our circumstances from determining our mood?

How can we emancipate ourselves from the limitations that life deals us?

The last in this trio of commandments from Paul opens the door for the other two to be true we can rejoice in hope and be patient in affliction because we have been faithful in prayer. No matter our situation, we can pray joyfully because of our hope in Christ. We can remain patient, persevering through affliction, by presenting our requests and intercessions to God with thanksgiving. Prayer is God's gift to us so that we can be patient and joyful, even when things don't appear to be going well. We can be joyful in hope and patient in affliction because we are faithful in prayer!

Prayer

Father, I thank you because no matter my struggles, you assure me of my ultimate victory in Christ Jesus. I thank you, dear God because no matter the hardship or burden I face, I know you will help me through it and bring me into your presence with great joy. So until that day of ultimate and victorious joy, please ransom my heart from discouragement by the power of hope from your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. — Romans 12:11

Thought

Paul is emphatic that Jesus' disciples must be full of spiritual fervor to serve the Lord. Jesus was even more emphatic that God wants us to be passionate about our Christian life. He told the believers in Laodicea to repent and be passionate when he said:

"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So because you are lukewarm neither hot nor cold I am about to spit you out of my mouth." (Rev. 3:15-16)

Jesus has done so much to redeem us. Let's live passionately for the Lord, and "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep [our] spiritual fervor"!

Prayer

Holy Lord and King of the Ages, I confess: I have sometimes let my spiritual fire die down and my spiritual fervor wane. Jesus, please have the Spirit come with holy fire, kindling a renewed zeal and passion for you in me as I live my life and influence those around me. I want to zealously and shamelessly pursue your mission in today's world and live a vibrant life that shows I love Jesus as my Lord! I ask this in Jesus' name and to honor you, Father. Amen.

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. — Romans 12:10

Thought

I love the old saying, "He who t***s his own horn plays in a very small band!" A very selfish part of us wants all attention and appreciation focused on what we have done, sacrificed, and accomplished. Christ Jesus told us that if we seek honor and recognition now, we have our reward now, on earth, and we won't receive our reward in heaven (Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21). One of the signs of spiritual maturity, however, is what Paul lists here. It's a devotion to others who are our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. This maturity means that we genuinely rejoice when others are honored. We are even more interested in honoring others than receiving honor. That is what devotion to others means. We care more about them being honored than us being honored, and that's living like Christ (Philippians 2:1-11).

Prayer

Dear God, my loving Father, thank you for surrounding me with many godly and honorable people. Please help me see ways I can show my brothers and sisters in Christ my love, affirmation, and appreciation. And dear Father, please lead me to your people who need this love, affirmation, and honor. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. — Romans 12:9

Thought

Our love cannot be feigned, faked, or fickle! That means that we abhor evil. We not only stay away from it but disdain it. At the same time, we commit ourselves to lovingly drawing closer to goodness and righteousness. There are no shades of gray in our intentions or motivations, only a passionate desire for what is right, good, and holy. We cling to what is good!

Prayer

Holy and Righteous Father, I know you declared me righteous and holy because of Jesus' sacrifice and my faith in him. Now, I ask that you help me live up to what you have declared me to be by your grace. Through your indwelling Holy Spirit's power, please fill me with your love and drive out anything unclean, evil, or rancid that dwells in my heart. I want my love to be sincere. I want to cling to what is good. I want to cast off all that is evil so I can bring you joy! In Jesus' name, I thank you. Amen.

I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. — Luke 12:8

Thought

What a simple way to inherit a blessing: we confess Jesus before people, and Jesus acknowledges us before the angels of God! We must not fall into the trap that caused Peter to stumble during the night of Jesus' arrest being strong when in the presence of friends and weak in the presence of those who are hostile. Let's be ready to share our faith with friends with "gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15). Let's be willing to be openly identified as one who knows Jesus and shows it by our words and deeds (Acts 4:13). Let's confess that Jesus is our Lord by our lives and our lips for all the world to see.

Prayer

Dear God, give me the courage to confidently acknowledge Jesus as Lord before my enemies, adversaries, and critics, just as I do before my friends, co-workers, and colleagues. May my faith in the Lord Jesus be boldly lived before others as I respectfully share my confidence in Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.

Wicked men are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous stands firm. — Proverbs 12:7

Thought

The principle of this proverb is true in every culture. An evil leader who has made his way to the top by murder, deceit, and violence ends up being murdered by one even more evil. Ruin comes to those who have brought ruination on others. This principle will be fully realized when Jesus comes and judges all people justly and with nothing hidden. Then, God's righteousness will shine like the sun. Jesus and those who belong to him will reign with him in his heavenly glory a glory which will not spoil, perish, or fade. Justice will triumph along with mercy, love, and life without death. All who are God's people who have been oppressed, abused, and martyred will find their way into the city God has prepared for those who love him. All wickedness will be overthrown, and those who have been made righteous in Jesus will live forever in the glorious presence of their Lord!

Prayer

Dear Father in heaven, we pray that your Kingdom comes with power in our world soon. We pray that your will is done here on earth just as in heaven. Bring down the arrogant and violent. Overthrow the wicked and murderous. Let those you have made righteous in Jesus stand in your glorious presence and grace as the Lord Jesus reigns over all his foes and brings your beloved children home to you. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. — Matthew 12:6

Thought

What is the most outstanding construction project built by human hands? Jesus is more remarkable still! What is the most holy place you have been? Jesus is far holier still! What is the most awe-inspiring site you have visited? Jesus is far more astonishing and holy! What is the most spiritually nourishing event you have ever attended? Jesus is far more nourishing and enriching and blessing! Jesus is the One Who Is Greater! Nothing else, no one else, can hold a candle to him. As John the Baptizer reminded us, the greatest religious leaders of all time are not even worthy to stoop down and unlatch Jesus' sandals. Jesus is greater than!

Prayer

Thank you, God, for revealing to me the Way, the Truth, and the Life through Jesus. Forgive me for the times I may have misused his name or underestimated his glory. Restore in me the child-like sense of joyous wonder that I need to have in his presence. In the holy and awesome and gracious name of Jesus, I live and I pray. Amen.

And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son." — Hebrews 12:5

Thought

When I was young, I always acted as if I hated discipline. It was part of the game. Most of the time, I didn't want the discipline. Sometimes, however, I "acted out" to get my parent's attention. Discipline was their way of getting mine! Now that I am older, I am so thankful that my parents loved me enough to discipline me firmly, to guide me lovingly, and to encourage me repeatedly. Their discipline and training have given me so many blessings and helped me understand what God is doing in my life. I need to recognize and appreciate the Lord's discipline in my life for similar reasons! The lack of love is not hate but indifference. The opposite of concern is an unwillingness to discipline. Thank God he loves and knows us enough to be involved in our lives and discipline us toward Jesus and heaven.

Prayer

Father in heaven, please help me recognize your discipline and correction in my life as part of your love, mercy, and grace. I want to live for you with an undivided heart, pleasing you in word, thought, and deed. I confess, however, that sometimes my heart is rebellious or my resolve can be weak. Thank you for helping me recognize my loss of spiritual direction through your loving discipline and guiding me back to your love, grace, and forgiveness.. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

December 4, 2024

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
— Romans 12:4-5

Today's Verse

An arm detached from a living body is just a dead and useless body part. Fingers detached from the hand can't write, grasp, work, or paint. A foot detached from a living body can't walk. We belong to each other because we need each other. We belong to each other because we belong to Christ, who holds his Body together and fills it with life because of his leadership and grace. We find our freedom to be what God has made us to be when we walk in harmony with each other and follow the lead of Christ, who is our Head! The Body of Christ finds its purpose and usefulness as each part offers itself to the Body for the good of the Body. We as disciples discover our usefulness when we offer ourselves to the rest of the Body and the work of the Lord.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank you for making me a part of something that is living, dynamic, powerful, and eternal. Thank you for giving me special abilities and gifts to use for the Body of Christ. Please help me find and use my gifts and abilities for the good of your people and to glorify Jesus, my Lord, in whose name I pray. Amen.
