Over the last several months, we have experienced drastic budget restrictions due to the effects of COVID-19. We regret to inform you that the Interdisciplinary Clinical and Academic Program will be dissolved July 14, 2020.

Across the span of five years, a small group of 5 grew into a diverse program of 155 interns. Through the years, we have advocated for patients, listening to their hardships and enacting change to perfect the patient experience. Together, we have achieved the unthinkable. During this time, we helped nearly 50K patients, visitors, and staff with the Wayfinding Guide program, completed just over 5K daily Patient Experience Rounds, signed up nearly 10K patients for our patient portal, and completed nearly 3K proxy accounts. We have cared for and touched countless lives and it is all due to the efforts of everyone who made ICAP possible. We thank everyone for their contributions toward achieving the perfect patient experience.

For today’s we would like to congratulate Sophia Velasco for being our Member of the Month for the entire month of June!
Sophia was nominated by Dr. Jacqueline who said, “Sophia is a new member of the ICAP QI Steering Committee. She serves on the onboarding subgroup. Each meeting we discuss needs and Sophia without hesitation steps up to offer to complete them. She completes them with great skill and in a very timely way. We are so fortunate to have her as a member of our team!”

We are so proud of you for your hard work Sophia! Please learn more about Sophia below:

“Hi, everyone! I’m Sophia Velasco, a rising sophomore pursuing a double major in Chemistry (Biochemistry) and Psychology (Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience) on a pre-medical track. I joined ICAP in Spring 2020 and have developed both professionally and emotionally ever since. Whether I’m WayFinding or helping with MyUFHealth sign-ups, connecting with the patients through their stories is no doubt my favorite part of ICAP. During my free time, I enjoy watching Netflix, playing video games, and drawing/painting. I hope everyone is staying safe during this time, and I hope to see you in the fall!
Fun fact: I’m a 3rd-degree blackbelt in Taekwondo and have broken a concrete slab during my black-belt testing!”

Good afternoon again all! Once again, we are back to showcase the amazing things that our ICAP interns have done!

In the past couple weeks, Julia has been working with Krispy Kreme to raise money to provide donuts to our healthcare workers at UF Health. Julia, along with our program supervisor Dr. Jacqueline, and many other ICAP interns raised $100 to get 20 dozens of Krispy Kreme donuts to our healthcare workers.

Julia has done such a wonderful job with our Helping the Helpers initiative, and it is fantastic to see the plans bloom into fruition. We thank you for your hard work Julia and your kind actions will definitely make someone's day a little sweeter!

ICAP would like to share a UF article that stars one of our very own intern, Lauren Bouskila!!!

Lauren has been hard at work to find ways to collect donations to help out those who are less fortunate. From using her left over FlexBucks to purchase food for donating or working together with ICAP and local restaurants to get food to our healthcare workers, Lauren has been going above and beyond to make an impact in our community!

We congratulate Lauren for her amazing work, and we love everything that she represents! Proud of you Lauren and keep it up!!

Happy Friday ICAPers!

We encourage you all to take a few minutes out of your day to participate in the initiative that many UF organizations are participating in! Post a video of how you are practicing self care (it's actually really fun to make) and nominate fellow interns or friends to do the same! If you do, don't forget to end the video with a heart and use the hashtag ! Help raise funds for the CDC as they combat the COVID-19 pandemic and the team at tinyurl.com/ComeTogether2020.

In addition, if you submit your video with your ICAP uniform or ICAP jacket, send it to [email protected] by 4/28 5 PM, we will forward the videos to UF DreamTeam organization to be part of their final surprise video! An example of the video is posted below. If you have any questions, please reach out to Anh Le, Brian Tran, Julia Adams, or Meher Kalkat.

Please check out our ICAP superhero Lauren Bouskila donating snacks and other food items she collected for healthcare heroes at Shands Neuromedicine Hospital. Through the ICAP Helping Helpers Initiative we hope to donate items, money, and food to Shands staff that are working tirelessly to keep us safe. Please contact the Culture committee if you would like more info on how to get involved.

If you would like to help donate much needed items, please read the blurb by Lauren below and reach out to the Culture Committee for more information:

“❤️ ITEMS: Those who are graduating or packing up their dorms, apartments, houses etc for move-out and have any food (preferably non-perishable), clothing, towels, linens, blankets, travel size toiletry items, razors etc that they will probably throw out.

❤️ FLEX BUCKS: Those who did not utilize all of their Flex Bucks due to unexpectedly leaving campus (they expire at the end of Spring) and feel comfortable allowing me to use some or all of their remaining balance to make purchases at the Pod Markets and all other stores accepting of this payment method. In addition to food, Flex Bucks can also be used to buy OTC medications, hygiene products, first aid kits and more.

Salma Mohamed and I have decided to use Flex Bucks as well as collect items from those graduating and/or moving out and taking them to local homeless shelters and food banks in Gainesville.

If you have any additional ideas/suggestions, want more information and/or would like to arrange donations: feel free to message Lauren via Facebook or send a text message to (954) 417-0129 (this number is only for this mission). If you would like to donate money instead of items, please also message Lauren to get more information on how you can do so.

Please keep your community in mind while moving out as well as share this information with your roommates, friends and classmates who may be able to contribute to the cause.”

Happy Monday everyone! For the last Member Crush Monday of our Spring Semester, we have the one an only, Julia Adams! Julia has always upheld hard work, dedication, and passion for ICAP whether we are in the clinic or working from home. Julia has helped out with many ICAP projects and events such as our Zoom Banquet last Thursday, organizing our event to help our healthcare workers, and everything else we ask of her.

Julia always brings a positive and joyful attitude to our program, and we cannot say enough how much we appreciate her! Keep up the tireless work!

Learn more about Julia below:
Hey there! My name is Julia Adams and I am a fourth year Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience major; I am in the honors college, on the pre-med track and working on a minor in Disability Sciences. I joined ICAP in the spring of 2019 and I have loved every minute of the internship since! My favorite part of ICAP is feeling like I am making a difference in someone’s healthcare experience by wayfinding or doing PPE rounds. There have been a few instances where patients have told me that my assistance has “made their day” or “is very appreciated because they were so nervous coming in” and the feeling that comes along with hearing that you affected someone in such a way has only pushed me harder to pursue healthcare and continue to have a positive effect on people. With my free time I love to ride horses and hangout with my best friends and my dog, Diva. A fun fact about me is that I’ve never seen snow...I’m fine with that though because I get cold when the A/C is any lower than 75!

Watch "The Farewell" movie today and comment below what you think about these questions:

1. During the movie the family had a tradition saying: “when people get cancer they die, it’s not the cancer that kills them it’s the fear.” How do you interpret that quote?
2. While the grandmother was in the hospital, the doctor did not consider her being unaware of her condition as a bad thing. He said it was traditional and that it "was a good lie." Do you agree or disagree?
3. During a further discussion of the situation, it was brought up that doing this to a loved one would be illegal in America. Do you believe that this should be a legal matter?
4. Towards the end of the movie, the granddaughter came around to her family's ways of not telling her grandmother about her condition. If this were you, would you want to know or would you want for your family to carry the emotional burden for you?

This week’s Member Crush Monday is our Reduce Variation intern, Jessica Smith! Here is what one of Jessica's QIMs had to say about her!

"As an adaptive leader, Jessica has assumed various ICAP shift roles with confidence. In addition, Jessica has also been extremely helpful and proactive with assisting with projects from home (literature reviews, manual edits, and more!)! We appreciate her professional communication and ability to delegate and work in group settings."

Despite all the craziness to our schedules, Jessica is still finding the time and motivation to keep her grind going! Keep up your hard work. We all appreciate your efforts!

Please give your congratulations to this week’s , Elizabeth Lossada-Soto! Elizabeth was nominated for, “Elizabeth went above and beyond and trained a tier 2 intern in R&V when her QIMs were unable to do so. I think this deserves to be shouted out for this and all the great work she puts into her rotations and the internship.”
Keep up the great work Elizabeth!

Learn more about Elizabeth below:
“I am a third Year, Psychology- Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience, Minor in Health Disparities in Society. I joined ICAP in Spring 2019. My favorite part of ICAP is talking to patients! I love hearing their stories and listening to what they have to say because their opinions matter, especially in trying to make their healthcare experience better. I also like bonding with my Small Team, I'm pretty competitive so I really enjoy being in a team and collaborating with them (especially when there's a challenge). In my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends or watching/listening to psychological thrillers of any sort! I also enjoy trying new foods. A fun fact about me is that as an unborn child, I went to a Shakira concert... I hope to go to one out of the womb someday.”

Protect your health and the health of those around you by staying home, and be prepared in case you get seriously ill with . Talk to a friend, a family member or other trusted person about becoming your medical care decision-maker if you can’t make decisions for yourself. In medical-speak, this is called a “health care proxy,” “health care agent” or “power of attorney for health care.” Then, document that person in an official state health care proxy/agent/power of attorney form or an Advance Directive, a term for any written health care instruction that specifies your wishes or names a proxy for you. And if given circumstances mean you can’t make it official make sure the person you choose knows what is important to you and your preferences for the amount and types of treatments you would want to receive. You may not be able to predict every choice you’ll have to make, but you can give them the guiding principles to confidently make decisions for you.

Happy April! In Alachua County, organizations work together to raise awareness about documenting one's health care wishes. The County Commissioners of Alachua have declared April 2020 to be National Health Care Decision Month. National Healthcare Decisions Month is our opportunity to remind all adults to consider “Who Will Speak for You?” in the event of an unexpected medical crisis, when you may be unable to voice your wishes. Completion of Advance
Directives allows a person to consider their values and engage in important conversations with their loved ones about their treatment preferences, if faced with serious or life-threatening illness, so that those choices may be honored. This week’s Member Crush Monday is our valued intern, Cristian Guerrero! Here is what our MCM nominator had to say about his hard work:

“Cristian volunteered to update the patient calls protocol for the Tier 2 manual earlier this semester and did an awesome, thorough job. He also goes above and beyond on patient calls shifts. For example, last week he set up a call with a translator and a patient since English was not the patient’s first language. Though the patient didn't answer, he took all the steps to call the interpreter twice since the patient had two numbers listed.”

Cristian, thank you for all that you do! Your spirit and determination in working to create the perfect patient experience is what our internship is all about. ICAP is lucky to have a dedicated, caring intern like you. Keep up the good work!
