What was most enchanting was sitting inside the monastery when the evening prayers were happening and the entire room was reverberating with the hymns of monks!!

Over the next 6 centuries, it was rebuilt multiple times. The first demolition happened when it was struck by lightning in 1638.

According to some locals, painters would seek livelihood from the wealthy owners and they would in turn oblige by offering work for beautifying their homes

Perhaps the owners would compete with each other to attract the silk route traders who passed by the town. Whatever be the real story, it resulted in a town that is an lover’s delight!!

Away from the tourist crowds that the bigger cities of draw are many small towns that still live in the older times. One such jewel is Mandawa.

It has many that were once home to businessmen who would make money from silk route traders passing through the town.

The businessmen would hire local painters to paint on the walls of their havelis. One such haveli we visited had this room with beautifully preserved paintings made with real gold!

In our next couple of posts, we will tell you more about this lovely town.
