"We had a week in HPB Merlewood in January with wonderful weather.

The Great Spotted Woodpecker was happy to have his photograph taken at Foulshaw Moss only a few minute drive away.

A walk around the beautiful Tarn Hows was fabulous in the sunshine and a walk around RSPB Leighton Moss needed our wellies to get to all of the hides - worth it to see close views of Common Snipe from Lillian’s hide!"

The main house here at HPB Merlewood includes nine apartments, and a further 46 one, two, three and four-bed properties complete the development. 🏡

Facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a tennis court, a dog paddock and outdoor crazy golf. A one bed and a two-bed apartment have been adapted for use by accompanied wheelchair holidaymakers. Full of character, is a delightful confusion of interweaving alleyways and cobbled “yards”: narrow lanes leading off the main thoroughfares, hitherto the domains of tradesmen – tanners, woodturners, butchers and so on – and today home to bijou boutiques and eateries.

The ruins of 13th-Century Kendal Castle stand on Castle Hill. It’s quite a climb, but worth it – the views over the town and surrounding fells are spectacular. It’s worth spending a few hours in Kendal; and maybe longer, if your visit coincides with market day (Wednesday).
