Dadivank

It received the name Dadivank in honor of Dadi, the disciple of the Apostle Thaddeus (Judas Thaddaeus), who preached Christianity in Armenia in the 1st century AD. Dadi was one of 70 disciples, who, by the order of the apostle Thaddeus, went to the northern parts of Armenia to preach Christianity. But Dadi died a martyr in Artsakh.
According to legend, Dadi built a church on the site during the 1st century. However, it is only legend, as there could not have been a church in Armenia before the 4th century when Christianity was adopted. More precisely, there was a pagan temple on the site of Dadivank monastery in pre-Christian Armenia.
According to folk mythology, the monk of Dativank was also a judge of the Armenians of Artsakh and conducted trials at the monastery, and sometimes even punished convicted felons. And so, the monastery was named Dadivank (translated from Armenian it means ‘the monastery of the court’).

The monastic complex got its name Gandzasar because it was built on the slopes of Gandzasar mountain.
There was a church in Gandzasar in the 10th century, as it was mentioned by the Armenian catholicos of that time, Anania Mokatsi. However, the monastic complex in its present form was built in the 13th century.
The main church of the complex, St. Hovhannes Mkrtich (John the Baptist), was built in 1216-1238 by Prince of Khachen, Hasan-Jalal. The Hasan-Jalalyans ruled in Artsakh long time.
The father of Hasan-Jalal, the Prince of Khachen, Vaghtang Tangik, before his death told his son and wife Khorishah, to build the Gandzasar monastery as a family cemetery. The church was consecrated in 1240, on the day of Vardavar (the transfiguration of Jesus Christ - the Feast of Transfiguration). There were princes, high-ranking clergymen and about 700 priests at the consecration ceremony.
Prince Hasan-Jalal left an inscription on the northern wall of the Church of St. Hovhannes Mkrtich of Gandzasar. According to his 27 lines inscription, when the construction works of Gandzasar began, his mother, Khorishah went to Jerusalem and lived many years in reclusion near the St. Sepulcher church until the end of her life.

In 1216-1221 Prince Liparit Orbelian and Bishop Sarkis built the church of St. Stephen the martyr. The gavit (narthex) - the open arched and pillared entry - of the church was built in 1223-61.
On the facade of the gavit (narthex) there is a relief of the bust of God in the form of a human, with impressive facial features, a long beard, large eyes, curly hair and long braids in the center of the image. Such a pictograph of God is unprecedented, as in medieval art God is usually depicted in a symbolic form (for example, in the form of a dove that came down from heaven). On the left hand of God, sculpted under God’s beard, is a symbol of the Holy Spirit - a dove with a cruciform crown - whose beak plucks at Adam's lips, of which only the head is sculpted.
On the right side of the stone there is a sculpture of an angel and the crucified Christ under the blessing hand of God, with the Holy Mother and the Evangelist John by his side.

Shushi can be considered the Armenian cultural capital, despite the fact that it has never been the official capital of the Armenian state.
Shushi is located in Varanda province of Artsakh, on a high inaccessible cape, which is situated more than 1500 meters above sea level.
Archaeological excavations produced evidence that there was a fortress-settlement in the territory of Shushi in the 9th century.
Shushi is said to have strong links with the medieval fortress ‘Shikakar’. According to the historical works of Movses Kaghankatvetsi, Sahl Smbatyan of the Aranshahik family made Shushi-Shikakar a key point of defense against the Arab conquest. The Aranshahiks were the ruling princes of Artsakh and Utik – the Armenian part of Caucasian Albania. There was a human settlement in this territory going back to the 3rd millennium BC. In the 13th century Shushi was mentioned as ‘Karkar’ in Kirakos Gandzaketsis ‘History of Armenia’. Shushi was also mentioned as Karkar in the works of other medieval historiographers. The settlement is also known as Shusha, Shosh, Panabir and Karaglugh.

The church of St. Grigor Lusavorich was built in 1033 by the Armenian prince, military leader and scientist, Grigor Magistros Pahlavuni.
Grigor Magistros was an outstanding figure of medieval Armenian science. He was a military leader, historiographer, philosopher, grammarian and teacher. Magistros taught at large educational institutions of the time - at the universities of Haghpat, Sanahin and Ani. In the 11th century, the influential Armenian prince founded secular schools throughout Armenia, which was one of the reason for the unprecedented rise of Armenian culture and science. One could insist that before the European Renaissance, there was an Armenian Renaissance, which ended during the Mongol invasions.

Sevanavank

During archaeological excavations at the site, artifacts from the Stone and Bronze Ages were revealed - evidence that confirms the territory was inhabited in ancient times.
The monastic complex was founded in 305AD, by King Trdat III and Grigor Lusavorich (or Gregory the Illuminator). But those old buildings do not exist today. In its present form, the monastery was built by Mariam, the daughter of King Ashot Bagratuni, who was the wife of the powerful Prince of Syunik, Vasak Gabur. Therefore, Sevanavank is also well known as Mariamashen.

Geghardavank

In ancient times, pagan temples were not only spiritual sacraments, but also fortified military posts. One example is the temple of Musasir, which the Assyrian king Sargon II pillaged in 714 BC. Brotherhoods functioned in these fortified temple-settlements, where brave Armenian youth were being educated, taught crafts, arts, military affairs and such. Ayrivank was one of these fortified military posts, and that’s why it was called so.

Haghartsin

The monastic complex of Haghartsin was built on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple, the evidence of which is in the architecture.
The monastic complex of Haghartsin was one of the largest centers of Scientific learning in medieval Armenia.
The monastery of Haghartsin was damaged during the Seljuk invasions. It was restored in the 12th century, and in the 17th century, it was completely renovated.
In 2015, the monastic complex of Haghartsin was again thoroughly renovated with the help of a financial contribution from the Sheikh of Sharjah, Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad al Qasim. During his visit to Armenia, the Sheikh happened to go to Haghartsin After seeing this medieval complex, located in the marvelous nature of Tavush region, he immediately decided to repair it by his own means, and began proceedings immediately.

The monastic complex of Khor Virap is one of the most important centers of Armenian Christian culture. The adoption of Christianity in Armenia is connected with Khor Virap.

According to legend, when the Armenian King Trdat III knew that one of his servants, Grigor Partev was a Christian and was also the son of Anak, who had killed his father, Khosrov I, he ordered that he be thrown into Artashat's royal dungeon, which was intended for those who were sentenced to death.
