Day 1: Pick up in Marrakesh | Ait Ben Haddou | Ouarzazate or Skoura (5hrs)
Today, you will depart from Marrakesh at 08:00 am. After passing over the Tizi n Tichka Pass of the High Atlas Mountains. Along the way you will stop for lunch and have the opportunity to visit the UNESCO world heritage site at Ait Ben Haddou. You might also enjoy exloring Ouarzazate. This relatively new city is home to the Kasbah once owned by the Glaouis family, who ruled Morocco. In the winter months and on the 4-star deluxe version of this trip, travelers will spend the night in Ouarzazate.

Day 2: Erg Chebbi in Merzouga (Sahara Desert) (5hrs)
Today, you will be taken to Merzouga. At the hotel, you can store any baggage and take an overnight bag with you. Following, prepare for a one hour jaunt on camel back into the desert. (Walking alongside the camels is also an option.) The night is spent dining alfresco under the stars followed by a night in a Bedouin-style tent. The tents are in our own private area without the hordes of people you might find in other camping locations. If you prefer not to camp out, simply ride the camel for one hour to view the sunset and spend the night at the kasbah hotel. We have both standard and deluxe camps available.

Day 3: Alnif | Dades Valley or Agdz (4-5hrs)
Following, youโ€™ll head through Alnif or Tinjedad and to Boulmane. Here, you can enjoy a drive up into the scenic Dades Valley to witness Moroccoโ€™s most amazing natural rock formations. Travelers on the 3/4-star trip can also choose to spend the night in Agdz to make this a more circuitous route giving a taste of the Draa Valley. This option adds on one more hour in transport.

Day 4: Return Marrakesh (5hrs)
Today, you will head back over the Tizi N Tichka pass and the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakesh.

Marrakesh or Marrakech is a major city in the northwest African nation of Morocco. It is the third largest city in the country after Casablanca and Rabat, and is the capital of the mid-southwestern region of Marrakesh-Tensift-El Haouz. Located to the north of the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, by road Marrakesh is located 580 km (360 mi) southwest of Tangier, 327 km (203 mi) southwest of the Moroccan capital of Rabat, 239 km (149 mi) southwest of Casablanca, and 246 km (153 mi) northeast of Agadir.

Marrakesh is the most important of Morocco's four former imperial cities (cities that were built by Moroccan Berber empires). The region was inhabited by Berber farmers from Neolithic times, but the actual city was founded in 1062 AD by Abu Bakr ibn Umar, chieftain and cousin of Almoravid king Yusuf ibn Tashfin. In the 12th century, the Almoravids built many madrasas (Koranic schools) and mosques in Marrakesh that bear Andalusian influences. The red walls of the city, built by Ali ibn Yusuf in 1122-1123, and various buildings constructed in red sandstone during this period, have given the city the nickname of the "Red City" or "Ochre City". Marrakesh grew rapidly and established itself as a cultural, religious, and trading centre for the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa; Jemaa el-Fnaa is the busiest square in Africa. After a period of decline, the city was surpassed by Fes, but in the early 16th century, Marrakesh again became the capital of the kingdom. The city regained its preeminence under wealthy Saadian sultans Abu Abdallah al-Qaim and Ahmad al-Mansur, who embellished the city with sumptuous palaces such as the El Badi Palace (1578) and restored many ruined monuments. Beginning in the 17th century, the city became popular among Sufi pilgrims for Morocco's seven patron saints, who are entombed here. In 1912 the French Protectorate in Morocco was established and T'hami El Glaoui became Pasha of Marrakesh and held this position nearly throughout the duration of the protectorate until the role was dissolved upon independence of Morocco and the reestablishment of the monarchy in 1956. In 2009, Marrakesh mayor Fatima Zahra Mansouri became the second woman to be elected mayor in Morocco: www.touaregtrails.com

The argan (Argania spinosa) is a species of tree endemic to the calcareous semi-desert Sous valley of southwestern Morocco and to the Algerian region of Tindouf in the western Mediterranean region. It is the sole species in the genus Argania.

Argan grows to 8โ€“10 metres high and live up to 150โ€“200 years. They are thorny, with gnarled trunks. The leaves are small, 2โ€“4 cm long, oval with a rounded apex. The flowers are small, with five pale yellow-green petals; flowering is in April. The fruit is 2โ€“4 cm long and 1.5โ€“3 cm broad, with a thick, bitter peel surrounding a sweet-smelling but unpleasantly flavoured layer of pulpy pericarp. This surrounds the very hard nut, which contains one (occasionally two or three) small, oil-rich seeds. The fruit takes over a year to mature, ripening in June to July of the following year.

Chefchaouen: This stunning Moroccan city in the Rif Mountains was originally built as a fortress in the 15th century. The mountains towering over Chefchaouen resemble a pair of goatโ€™s horns, and, perhaps not coincidentally, the creamy native goat cheese is one of the most popular regional treats. Architecture enthusiasts will marvel at the Jewish-inspired blue-tinted buildings, octagonal mosque and Spanish ruins.
