Our Lady of the Assumption >> The Portuguese church “Our Lady of the Assumption” is one of the most remarkable historical monuments of the Portuguese city Mazagan in the city of El Jadida. It is located in the central square of the Portuguese fortress (Praça Terreiro). A Portuguese inscription on stone inside the church explains that its construction dates back to 1579. Our Lady of the Assumption has since become the main place of worship for the Portuguese in Mazagan. This church is designed according to the Manueline architectural style from the beginning of the 16th century (in relation to the King of Portugal Manuel I). Rectangular in shape, the church is 44 meters long and 12 meters wide. It has a single nave, a choir, and a sacristy. It is covered with a double-pitched roof with a solid wood frame and red tiles. Its four-sided bell tower overhangs the main entrance, it bears by its shape the impact of the minarets of the local mosques. Mazagan housed other churches: the Church of Mercy, the first church erected by the Portuguese and some remains of which are still visible on the roof of the first Portuguese citadel next to the prison tower, the Church of Our - Lady of the Light near the bastion Saint - Esprit, damaged during the siege of the Saadians in 1562, and of which some traces still remain to the right of the entrance to the city (towards the rue de sidi Bettache), the church of Saint Sebastian, as well as other churches and chapels which are no longer present today. At the time of the French protectorate, restoration work was carried out on the church from 1919, its tower was raised.The church became from 1921 a place of worship for the French residents in the city and carried the name of the French church. Further restoration work was carried out at the church subsequently by the Ministry of Culture. The church was rehabilitated and converted into a theater from 2015. Notre - Dame - de - l'Assomption was classified as a historical monument by the Dahir of September 21, 1918 and Universal Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on June 30, 2004 with the rest of the monuments of the Portuguese city of.
