The Tara Through it attractiveness and adventure its offers, the Tara is among the top world rafting rivers. It is 150km long and so pure one can drink its water. It is wonderful that many international organizations have decided to take care of it.
The Tara has about 70 tributaries, and there are as many as eighty caves along its flow. It is abundant with exquisite pastureland and forest, which makes it ideal for cattle breeders. That is why traces depicting that man lived here in ancinet times should not surprise. Hypothetically, in thoes ancient times, it recieved its name after the Illyrian clan of Autarijati.
It rises from its spring with in altitude of 2400m, below the peaks of Maglić Kariman. The Verušica and the Opasanica in fact, form it, and after some 10km of individual roaming, they join in a beautifully romantic enviroment.
The miraculous canyon of the Tara cuts between the mountains Sinjajevina and Durmitor from one, and Ljubišnja and Zlatni bor from the other side. It is 78km long, from Prošćenje and the monastery of Dobrilovina to Šćepan Polje, its average depth is 1000m. Because of the mountain chain, the canyon reaches a depth of 1300m, which makes it, after the Colorado river canyon in America, the second by its depth and length in the world.
The strength of plants: some plant species from the Tara originate from the ice age. The fact that the Tara canyon contains the greatest number of healing herbs on the entire planet is more than merely interesting. Growing on rocks, closest to the river are the following 3 species: black pine, black hornbeam, black ash, elm and in some places, there are lime trees.
In the higher regions, one can find the oak, common hornbeam and common maple, along with beech trees. In the regions over thousand meters high, vast lands are covered with fir and spruce trees. On the very peak, along the rim of the canyon, the lone pines keep watch.
The pine forests are of extraordinary value. The best known are Crna poda, known as Gulliver’s vrgin forest. With gigantic trees 400 hundred years old, 50m high, and with a radius of 120cm.
As for the animals, the canyon massif is a real paradise for chamois. Fawns and boars are a very common sight here, as well as wolves and bears. It is a habitat of ermine, lynx, weasels, otters, as well as numerous numbers of fish species.
Rafting: The journey can last one, two or more days and its length can vary between 15 and 85km. This adventure commences at Splavište from where the waterfalls of the Ljutica, the bridge, the Roman passage, and lever Tara can be seen. Bijele ploče, Mišovo vrelo, the Draga waterfalls and Radovan luka follow. After the rest point, one will encounter the breathatking rapids: Tepački rapids, the Sušica canyon, the unique Bajlovica sige(waterfalls) and Brštanovački rapids. The shorter route, from Brštanovića to Šćepan polje (18km) lasts only a few hours but these hours are hours of sheer joy- 21 out of 50 rapids are on this route. After all the excitement a quite lunch break on the river bank is more than a simple pleasure, especially if you treat yourself to the most delicious dishes from this region such as traditionally home made bread, trout, cheese, cream and lamb.
