Crna Gora - Montenegro

Where Land & Sea Embrace
There's not a lot of it – barely 100km from tip to toe – but Montenegro's coast is quite extraordinary. Mountains jut sharply from crystal-clear waters in such a way that the word 'looming' is unavoidable. As if that wasn't picturesque enough, ancient walled towns cling to the rocks and dip their feet in the water like they're the ones on holiday. In summer the whole scene is bathed in the scent of wild herbs, conifers and Mediterranean blossoms. The word 'magical' is similarly impossible to avoid.

Go Wild
When the beaches fill up with Eastern European sunseekers, intrepid travellers can easily sidestep the hordes in the rugged mountains of Durmitor and Prokletije, the primeval forest of Biogradska Gora or in the many towns and villages where ordinary Montenegrins go about their daily lives. Hike, mountain bike or kayak yourself to somewhere obscure and chances are you'll have it all to yourself. This is, after all, a country where wolves and bears still lurk in forgotten corners.

Living on the Edge
Ever since the Roman Empire split in two 1600 years ago, this land has sat on the borderline between east and west – and it's all the more interesting for its turbulent past. The richness of its cultural history can be seen in the mosaic floors of Roman villas, flamboyantly painted Orthodox monasteries, ornate Catholic churches, the elegant minarets of mosques, and the sturdy fortresses built by the numerous powers that have fought over these lands. Then there's the legacy of 50 years as a communist state, independent of both the Eastern Block and the West. For those with even a passing interest in European history, it's a fascinating place.

Why I Love Montenegro

I still remember the sheer thrill I felt when confronted with the extraordinary beauty of the Bay of Kotor for the first time – and each time I visit, that thrill returns. For me, Montenegro is at its most magical on long summer evenings when the streets fill up with people, young and old, heading out for a slow, social stroll – a scene that's repeated in every city, town and village throughout the country. Sit me somewhere with a glass of local wine, a plate of grilled squid and a view of the passing parade, and I'm in heaven.

Small But Perfectly Formed
Imagine a place with sapphire beaches as spectacular as Croatia's, rugged peaks as dramatic as Switzerland's, canyons nearly as deep as Colorado's, palazzos as elegant as Venice's and towns as old as Greece's and then wrap it up in a Mediterranean climate and squish it into an area two-thirds of the size of Wales and you start to get a picture of Montenegro. You could easily drive clear across the country in a day – or spend a month and be left wanting more. Ironically, this tiny place is populated by giants – arguably the tallest people in the world.

The beach's length is 12,000 meters (8 miles), thus is the longest beach in Montenegro.

The New York Times included Velika plaža and Montenegro's South Coast (including Ada Bojana and Hotel Mediteran in a ranking of top travel destinations for 2010 - "Top Places to Go in 2010".
Velika plaža is natural asset of Montenegro that the government hopes to see developed as part of the country's tourism development strategy, albeit in an environmentally friendly manner. The vast hinterland of the beach is mostly undeveloped, so it is potentially the site of the biggest greenfield investment on Montenegrin coast.
Velika plaza beach, near Ulcinj in Montenegro is the premier kiteboarding location on the Adriatic Coast. Fourteen kilometres strip of petty sand beach with strong cross onshore winds almost every day during summer afternoons makes it ideal for safe learning. Set in a protected natural area, surrounded by dunes and hidden by alluvial forests you will find the perfect spot to spend summer holidays on your own, with friends or your family.

RAFTING on Tara river is an adrenaline sport, a combination of adventure and relaxation. It represents a memorable event for every visitor. It is performed in inflatable boats made especially for wild rivers. In these boats can fit 8-10 people. Boat is run by skipper guides. All skippers possess IRF (International Rafting Federation) certificates and all have over 50 descents during the seaso. Before leaving for rafting, rafters get the necessary equipment, and skippers keep a short briefing. Lowering the boat down Tara is a real challenge for adventurers and nature lovers..

One of the deepest canyons in the world, the Tara River gorge snakes along 48 miles (78 kms) of a total river length of 89 miles (144 kms). Completed in 1940, the Tara crossing is the highest and largest bridge in the region and includes an approach viaduct of 4 arches leading to a main span span of 448 feet (136.43 mtrs). It was this large arch over the river that was blown up in 1942 by Partisan’s looking to block an Italian-Chetnik offensive. A bridge engineer, Lazar Jaukovic, aided in the span’s demise and was eventually captured by the Italians and executed on the bridge. The arch was rebuilt after World War II in 1946.
The height of Tara bridge is somewhat murky. Some sources have it as low as 443 feet (135 mtrs) and as high as 564 feet (172 mtrs). The truth is probably somewhere in-between. Until I can travel to Montenegro and measure it myself, I will list it at 459 feet (140 mtrs). Tara bridge was designed and constructed by Mijat Trojanovi with Isaac Russo as the chief engineer.
Rafting is extremely popular on the Tara River and a great way to experience the bridge from below. Trips leave from Splaviste and can last from 1 to 3 days depending on the package you choose.

There is an extremely large number of very unusual and interesting medieval fortified towns throughout Montenegro. Image These buildings bear witness to the stormy and rich history of the country. The area in which the largest number of these historical and architectural jewels is concentrated is Lake Skadar and its immediate surroundings. ImageAccording to some sources, the fortress is mentioned in the 10th century, during the time of the first dynasty that ruled the area that is today Montenegro (then known as Doclea), the Vuislavljevic dynasty. But what is certain is that Zabljak was the capital of the Crnojevic dynasty, first of Stefan, and then of Ivan Crnojevic, right up until 1478. Then it was captured by the Turks, in whose hands it remained right up to 1878, that is the Berlin Congress and the international recognition of Montenegro. ImageAmongst the most important monuments in the town are Ivan's palace and the church of St. George, and the architecture shows the Venetian influence from the early period of the town's existence, as well as the Turkish influence from the period of their occupation. Image Zabljak Crnojevica is not lived in today, but thanks to its beauty, its historical significance and its dominating position it is one of the most interesting tourist attractions around Lake Skadar.
In addition to increadible views where you can make great photographies, we offer you also short cruises from this place.

Magnificent scenery ratchets up to stupendous in this national park, where ice and water have carved a dramatic landscape from the limestone. Forty-eight peaks soar to over 2000m in altitude, with the highest, Bobotov K*k, reaching 2523m. From December to March Durmitor is a major ski resort, while in summer it’s a popular place for hiking, rafting and other active pursuits.
The park is home to enough critters to cast a Disney movie, including 163 species of bird, about 50 types of mammals and purportedly the greatest variety of butterflies in Europe. It’s very unlikely you’ll spot bears and wolves, which is either a good or bad thing depending on your perspective. We were assured that the wolves are only dangerous if they’re really starving at the end of a long winter.
Durmitor National Park covers the Durmitor mountain range and a narrow branch heading east along the Tara River towards Mojkovac. Žabljak, at the eastern edge of the range, is the park’s principal gateway and the only town within its boundaries. It’s not very big and neither is it attractive, but it has a supermarket, a post office, a bank, hotels and restaurants, all gathered around the car park masquerading as the main square.
West of the park, the Tara forms the border with Bosnia and joins the Piva River near Šćepan Polje.

Clear, green water and the reflection of the limestone rocks captivate visitors and it is increasingly becoming a favorite camping place for mountaineers and fishermen.

According to the legend, Captain Musović from Niksic had on the place of today's lake pasture and often remained in it, enjoying the beauty of this place. Over his pasture, in the mountainous rocks, there was a spring, whose water fairies used for bathing, and to restore their strength. Every evening fairies gathered at the spring and secretly bathed hidden form men and drank clear spring water. When they wanted to go, before dawn, they closed the spring till the next night and new gathering.

One night a fairy, that went last, forgot to close the spring, whose water flooded the captain Musović's pasture and the surrounding valleys. Then the fairies moved the spring lower, under the pasture so that the spring could supplied the newly formed lake with the water. The Captain lake was develop with the negligence of the fairies or with the imagination of nature, in whose 35-meter-deep water are now enjoying many tourists, that the road takes to this popular meeting place for hikers and fishermen. The lake is located at an altitude of 1,678 meters.

The Monastery of Ostrog is a monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church sitatued against an almost vertical background, high up in the large rock of Ostroška Greda, in Montenegro. It is dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog (Sveti Vasilije Ostroški), who was buried here. From the monastery, a superb view of the Bjelopavlići plain can be seen. The monastery is located 50km from Podgorica and 15km from Nikšić. Ostrog monastery is the most popular pilgrimage place in Montenegro.

Njeguši is a village in the Cetinje Municipality of southern Montenegro, located on the slopes of Mount Lovćen, within the Lovćen national park. The village is best known as the birthplace of the Petrović dynasty, which ruled Montenegro from 1696 to 1918, as well as the Montenegrin office of the ''serdar'' and ''guvernadur'', held by the Radonjić family. The village is also significant for its well-preserved traditional folk architecture. Njeguški sir and Njeguški pršut (local forms of cheese and prosciutto respectively), made solely in area around Njeguši, are genuine contributions to Montenegrin cuisine. The village is situated in the Njeguši field and is also a center of the tribe of the same name. The tribe itself consists of the settlements: Dugi Do, Žanjev Do, Herakovići, Kopito, Vrba, Rajićevići, Velji and Mali Zalaz, Majstori and Mirac and forms a part of Katunska Nahija, one of the provinces of Old Montenegro. The tribal name Njeguši is according to Ilija Ruvarac derived from Negusius Podcupica, mentioned in an 11th-century document.

Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro. It is located in a secluded part of the Gulf of Kotor. The city has a population of 13,510 and is the administrative center of Kotor Municipality.

The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period. It is located on the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea. Some have called it the southern-most fjord in Europe, but it is a ria, a submerged river canyon. Together with the nearly overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovćen, Kotor and its surrounding area form an impressive and picturesque Mediterranean landscape.

In recent years, Kotor has seen a steady increase in tourists, many of them coming by cruise ship. Visitors are attracted both by the natural beauty of the Gulf of Kotor and by the old town of Kotor.

Kotor is part of the World Heritage Site dubbed the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor.

At only fifty kilometers north from Podgorica, on a way to the foot of the Komovi lies Bukumirsko lake, with wondrous beauty and history full of legends. Although not yet recognized as one of the tourist places of interest in Montenegro, stories about the beauty of the lake Bukumirsko , about which all those who have come to its shores can attest to, is slowly spreading beyond the borders and finding its way to nature lovers.
The lake, according to legend, was created when an unknown traveler stopped there and wished to be strengthened with water. When he wake up in the morning, lake appeared in the bay below where he fell asleep. Since then, many travelers found refreshment in this place and quench their thirst with water from the lake.

Lovćen is a mountain and national park in southwestern Montenegro.

Mount Lovćen rises from the borders of the Adriatic basin, closing the long and twisting bays of Boka Kotorska and making the hinterland to the coastal town of Kotor. The mountain has two imposing peaks, Štirovnik (1,749 m) and Jezerski vrh (1,657 m).

The mountain slopes are rocky, with numerous fissures, pits and deep depressions giving its scenery a specific look. Lovćen stands on the border between two completely different natural wholes, the sea and the mainland, and so it is under the influence of both climates. The specific connection of the life conditions has caused the development of the different biological systems. There are 1,158 plant species on Lovćen, four of which are endemic.
