The village of Dougouba has a beautiful mosque. A village visit is not recommended for everybody, though. In an upcoming virtual tour Ibrahim takes us to Dougouba. Stay tuned.

THERE AREN’T MANY TRAVEL EXPERIENCES more rewarding than having a close encounter with a wild animal in its natural habitat. Be it a tiger, a whale, or a platypus, it is about watching the animal

Kalabougou is a village located across the Niger river from Ségou (Mali). The village is known for its craftsmanship, particularly pottery of which the women of the village are traditionally employed in. The potters of Kalabougou are major suppliers of pottery for sale in Bamako, as well as to nearby Segou.

Kalabougou's women have traditionally been employed as pottery makers. About 2,000 pots are created a week and shipped off to be sold at markets across Mali. The villagers' prowess has attracted international attention.

Firings take place in Kalabougou every Saturday and Sunday in the late afternoon. By mid-afternoon, many women and their daughters have brought unfired pots from the compounds where they were made to the firing place, a process that takes many hours... When the women and girls have brought all the pots to the firing place, they begin to construct the mound by placing a layer of branches on the ground. The pots are positioned on and amid the branches and then grass is piled high to complete the mound... When a mound is completed and the ground around has been swept clean of residual combustible material, a senior potter lights the fire...

It's not uncommon in a rainy season storm for boats to set out on a journey without a captain, or to go under.
Yesterday our team faced their biggest test ever. One of our beauties had sunk during the night. About twenty people (and a 4WD) joined forces, several of them ignoring their weakened bodies, spending hours in the cold river.
Feeling super proud of all of them, for showing the spirit and teamwork to bring this beauty back to the surface and make her float again.
Today the 'damage report' is made, and repair works are started.
🙏 Grateful for our amazing team members and friends! 🙏

This article - featuring Burkinabe Ouedraogo Ben Aziz - about how the valuable African history has been banned from education is well-worth a read. (Google translate might be a good option if you don't understand Dutch.)
Human rights and everyone being of equal value was the foundation of Sundiata Keita's 13th century Manding empire.

Kouroukanfouga, and related sites are featured in our Manding virtual tour. Today is the final day to take advantage of our July offer to order it for €10.
