The mud is first collected from the river and brought into town where it is left to mature in great mounds in the streets in front of the houses or in special large vats in front of the mosque.

After around three weeks of fermentation, the mud is mature and ready for plastering onto the walls-this is always done directly by the hand. The night before the rebuilding, the villagers take part in a carnival of singing and dancing known as La Nuit de Veille, or The Waking Night

The whole community of Djenné takes part in the annual repair of the mosque during a festival called Crepissage de la Grand Mosquée. A race is held at the start of the festival to determine who will be the first to deliver the plaster to the mosque.

The Great Mosque of Djenné (Arabic: الجامع الكبير في جينيه) is a large brick or adobe building in the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style. The mosque is located in the city of Djenné, Mali, on the flood plain of the Bani River. The first mosque on the site was built around the 13th century, but the current structure dates from 1907. As well as being the centre of the community of Djenné, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. Along with the "Old Towns of Djenné" it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

Mali Festivals Tour
We have a very special journey for you. Our festivals tour of Mali will take you to the famous Festival Sur Le Niger in Ségou, where the best musicians from all over the country will perform, as well as the Dogon festival in Bamako. We’ll get the chance to attend many of the events happening around Bamako during this time, including various mask dances from local Dogon villages.
In order to understand the fascinating Malian culture and its colourful mosaic of traditions and peoples, it is necessary to go back to its deepest roots, which originate in the green hills of the Pays Manding, a land steeped in history and ancestral spirituality. But also by immersing oneself in the chaotic contemporaneity of Bamako, with its cultural ferment, its contradictions and its ‘imaginative’ urban decadence. Two sides of the same coin.
A journey into the Malian ancestral culture, between divinations with the throwing of cauris, propitiatory dances of the valiant Bambara hunters and ancient legends sung by the griots. Historical places where Soundjata Keita and General Kamandjan Camara, in the Middle Ages, pronounced the first human rights charter in Africa and performed their heroic deeds, among sacred caves and miraculous rock arches. Enchanting landscapes and waterfalls hidden among the cracks in the rock, valleys of mangoes and wild plants with therapeutic powers, small mud villages where the inhabitants are said to still possess the occult power to transform themselves into lions.
But also a trip to Bamako, with its incredible cultural attractions, from the Musée National, which houses priceless artefacts from the Djene-Jeno site and votive statuettes from the Tellem era, to the bustling Grande Marché, where you can lose yourself for hours; from the picturesque fe**sh market, amidst bones, animal skins and lucky charms of all kinds (gris-gris), to the recycling market, amidst an acoustic horror vacui, which brings recycled metals back to life; or the meeting with the marionette player/artist Yaya Coulibaly, who guards the largest collection of marionettes in Mali and passes on this ancient theatrical, sculptural and therapeutic art around the world.

Discover Burkina Faso in this 9 Day tour of the country. Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa. It covers an area of around 274,200 square kilometers. On this tour, you explore the several cities and communities in Burkina Faso. Highlights of the are; Ouagadougou, which is the Capital of Burkina Faso, Tiebele, Bobo Dioulasso, Banfora, Niansogoni and Gaoua.

HIGHLIGHTS
Bobo Dioulasso
Banfora
Waterfalls of Karfeguela
Troglodytes in caves
Loropeni
Sacred crocodiles
Day 1: OUAGADOUGOU

Arriving in Burkina Faso's international airport in Ouagadougou, the "country of honest people," you are welcomed, escorted, and taken to a hotel for the night.

Day 2: OUAGADOUGOU – TIEBELE – OUAGADOUGOU
After breakfast, you will drive to Tiebele an authentic Kassena village

Architecturally specific houses with wall paintings are typical for Kassena people who belong to the greater Gurunsi ethnic group, living in northern Ghana and southern Burkina Faso. Wall decorating or painting is an ancient practice, but is, unfortunately, nowadays rapidly disappearing.

In fact, there are only a few families left in the village that still have their buildings freshly renovated – as I interpreted, mostly for the purposes of tourism, at least.

In the afternoon, drive back to Ouagadougou overnight
Day 3: OUAGADOUGOU – BOBO DIOULASSO
Today, you will drive to the country’s second largest city and its chief trade and industrial centre, Bobo Dioulasso has bicycle assembly works, cigarette factories, cotton gins, and a variety of food-processing plants. The sale of ivory, bronze, and iron handicrafts as well as traditionally crafted jewelry is economically significant. Fruits and vegetables are sold in the large marketplace.

Major roads radiate from the city, and it is a stop on the rail line between Abidjan (capital of Côte d’Ivoire) and Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital. Borgo International Airport is just to the west. Bobo Dioulasso is an Islamic centre with a large clay mosque dramatically studded with wooden pikes. It has a college, the West African Centre for Economic and Social Studies, and it is the seat of government research institutes for geology and mines and for cotton and textiles.

Upon arrival, check in Hotel Sissiman and start a short city tour including the mosque, the old quarter (Kibidwe) the cat fish in the river, the Music Museum and the Provincial Museum.

Back to Hotel for overnight

Day 4: BOBO DIOULASSO – BANFORA – SINDOU

Breakfast at the hotel followed by departure to Banfora called the Cascade Region of Burkina Faso. You will visit a natural rock formation called “Les domes de Fabedougou” the waterfalls of Karfeguela, Continue to Sindou overnight.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: SINDOU – NIANSOGONI – BOBO DIOULASSO
Early morning after an early breakfast, you will drive to Niansogoni, a village on a hill. By seeing this village, you will have the Impression to be in Dogon Country, in Mali. You will visit the troglodytes in caves. Walk down to the vehicle and drive to Bobo Dioulasso via Banfora.

Breakfast at Hotel and drive to Gaoua. Upon arrival in Gaoua, check-in Hotel and lunch.

Afternoon, you will drive to Loropeni a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A guided tour will lead you to the ruins of Loropeni, then Continue to Obire to visit the Gan King. There are seven tribes who came from Ghana, and it is the Gan tribe that has a King.

You will greet the King, visit the sanctuary, and the representation of all the Kings and 4 Queens. According to them, one should not be King if you are under 40 years which is the reason why they had four Queen. Drive back to Gaoua overnight.

Meals included: Breakfast

Hotel: Auberge

Day 7: GAOUA
Today will be devoted to the discovery of Gaoua, the Museum, Women's Cooperative, and the market. The rest of the day will be at leisure. Overnight at the hotel.

Festival Tour

The Gerewol is an annual courtship ritual competition among the Woddabe Fula people in Niger. Young men dressed in elaborate ornamentation and made up in traditional face painting gather in lines to dance and sign, each vying for the attentions of single young women. The Gerewol occurs each year as the traditionally nomadic Wodaabe cattle herders gather at the southern edge of the Sahara before dispersing south on their dry season pastures.

The most famous gathering point is In-Gail in northwest Niger, where a large festival, market and series of clan meetings take place for both the Wodaabe and the pastoral Tuareg People. The actual dance event is called the Yaake, while other less well-know elements, such as bartering over dowry; competitions or camel races among suitors make up the weeklong festival. The Gerewol is found wherever the Wodaabe gather.

At the end of the rainy season in September, the Wodaabe travel to InGail to gather salt and participate at the Cure Salee festival, a meeting of several nomadic groups. Here the young Wodaabe men, with elaborate makeup, feathers and other adornments, perform dances and songs to impress women. The male beauty ideal is the Wodaabe stresses height, white eyes and teeth. The man will often roll their eyes and show their teeth to emphasize these characteristics. The Wodaabe clans will then join together for their weeklong Gerewol celebrations, a contest where the young men’s beauty is judged by young women.
