Grinnell United Activism Collective We are a fellowship of students who seek to bring the Standing Rock brand of positive activism to Grinnell College. It's tiring to be pi**ed off all the time.

We have an apartment, Cowles 7112; come visit! During the most recent Spring Break a few students from Grinnell spent some time at Little Creek, a Standing Rock offshoot camp that had just been founded 40 miles from Grinnell. Our time there was one filled with inspiration, and none of us were quite the same when we came back to campus. We founded Little Creek Movement with the belief that the idea

listic, inclusive, community-oriented brand of activism we encountered at Little Creek is the exact sort of movement that can change the country as bitterly divided as the United States is at current. We weren't completely satisfied with the activism already present at Grinnell. We felt that activism at Grinnell was predominately "anti" in nature, focused on resisting negative changes in society rather than uniting around a collective vision for a better world. Our belief was that this type of activism tends to drain the people who are involved with it. In order for people to become really passionate about changing the world, they need to have a vision for the world they're working to help create. This why the most central tenant of Little Creek Movement is in bringing Grinnell students to the camp. At Little Creek, they can experience for themselves the joy of a community outside the bounds of our consumerist culture, founded on a collective respect for the earth, and populated by people from all different walks of life, many of whom have found home for the first time. To us, Little Creek represents the power of the Standing Rock movement, and by extension, our own movement. It's a physical reminder of the fact that our vision for a society that is sustainable rather than consumerist, founded on community rather than efficiency, connection rather than GDP, is completely achievable. And through our regular visits there, we arm ourselves with the hope and strength necessary to make it a reality. Our last trip to Little Creek for the semester will take place on the weekend of May 6th. We'll all be camping there for a night together before we go back to campus the next day. Transportation and supplies will be provided for, and all are welcome. If you're interested in joining us, send us an email at [littlecreek]. We'd be glad to have you.

Hey everyone! As you all may know, GUAC's Racial Justice Campaign has been pushing to establish an Africana Studies Concentration AS WELL as a Jewish Studies Concentration at Grinnell. As a first step, we are preparing to establish a 1-credit course next semester focusing on the intersections between Africana and Jewish studies. This course would be student-led by Nicholas Raphaelson and mentored by Katya Gibel Mevorach, head of American Studies/Anthropology Professor. Please fill out this survey if you would potentially be interested in enrolling in this course! Last semester we learned the college’s medical leave practices are more about reducing their liability than the student's wellbeing. THIS IS NOT OK, AND WE ARE NOT OK WITH IT. If you have a story about your experience with SHACS, medical leave, or other health policies, please consider sharing it via this fully anonymous survey. https://qtrial2019q1az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5gvkukci3FnVDoh

We’re super excited about the projects and initiatives we are leading next semester. These include the Mental Health Movement, the Racial Justice Campaign, film nights, music events, open mics, extensive student life programming developed in partnership with Res Life, and more.

We’re proud to be the diverse, intersectional, and inclusive hub of activism on campus, and we’re excited to announce the New Leaders Initiative, which will provide mentorship opportunities for first, second, and third-year students looking to take a leadership role in Grinnell’s activist hub.

Hello Friends,
Hope you all had a magical spring break. We are posting because we are applying to have an LCM floor next year on south campus. Please let us know if you may be interested in this. Right now we are just trying to check interest and you dont have to commit to living on the floor just yet. Please let us know by monday if you are interested. Have a good first week back!

Hello Friends,
We are currently looking into getting people to sign a letter we have written expressing some positive changes we want to see in the dining hall. If you could take a couple of minutes to read the letter and write your name and email in the comments of this post if you agree with our ideas, that would be very awesome of you. Either way have a wonderful day!
Best Wishes,
Dan

Hello friends,
Two Exciting announcements!

1) The trip to the Possibility Alliance was incredible. Though only five of us were able to go, we learned many lessons that we hope to bring back to campus to change ourselves and others for the better. Though I would like to write a more detailed account of our adventure, I am concerned that words typed into a computer and published in a facebook feed could never convey the gravity of the experience. If you are interested in learning more, we will likely discuss it at our next meeting which I will post here when we are more certain of date/time.

2) We are helping cook a community meal tomorrow! Little Creek Movement will be helping with the Grinnell Community meal from 3:30 until about 7:30. This is a great opportunity to take a break from studying and connect with the local community in a very positive manner. The meal is at Davis Elementary school. A shuttle will leave to take volunteers from the CRSSJ at 3:15. Additionally, I will be driving over a little after 4 so I can take anyone who may have a class until that time (And if you want to leave at an even later time and would like a ride just ask and we’ll see what we can do). Stop in to help for as little or as long as you want. We really hope to see you there! Either way, have a wonderful week and enjoy the break.

Best,
Dan

Hello friends,
This weekend Little Creek Movement is excited to host a very special trip! We will be visiting a commune called The Possibility Alliance, a group of people striving to live as self-reliantly as possible. They grow their own food, live without electricity, and have a radically different view of how an economy can function within small communities. This is a big opportunity to experience a model of life extraordinarily different from how most of us live day to day, and will hopefully allow all of us to reflect on practices we take for granted in our own lives. Below I will attach a link to a video explaining a bit of how the community works. For those interested in coming, we will be leaving tomorrow, Friday November 17th, at 4pm. We will meet in Main Lounge before driving 2.5 hours to the commune, and we will have one car returning to Grinnell Saturday after lunch, and another returning Sunday after Breakfast. Do not fear if you have never been to a Little Creek Movement event before; We welcome anyone and everyone! We strive to make everyone feel that they belong and you will always be treated as one of our own. We will be staying indoors while we are there, and we have sleeping bags for those that do not have their own. We will spend time learning about the communes practices, helping with work, and participating in community building activities. This is a rather special experience, as the community is usually booked up for visitors and they will be relocating soon. We hope you will not hesitate to take advantage of this opportunity! If you are interested in going or want more details please message us as soon as you can. Do not miss out on Little Creek Movement’s last big event of the semester!
Sincerely,
Dan (Little Creek Movement member)

Quickfacts:

1. Single fracking well uses up to 13 million gallons of water
That’s 19 Olympic swimming pools.

2. There are 1.3 million fracking facilities (wells, processor, and compressors) in the U.S.

3. On average there is a crude oil spill every other day in the U.S.

To all our Grinnell Water Protectors- we miss you, and hope your summer is going well! Here are some photos from our last trip to the camp during the spring for you to enjoy. In the fall the movement resumes- we will hit the ground running with new actions, trips to Little Creek, group gatherings, and more as we continue our exploration of sustainable, community oriented activism. This morning brought with it a fantastic surprise- Little Creek made the front page of the Scarlet and Black, thanks to the stalwart reporting of Jon Sundby! We loved having him along with us on our last trip to Little Creek. Come back soon Jon. Check out the full article here.

Many of the activists who have started a camp at Little Creek, a new community of water protectors in Jackson County, Iowa, have stories about Standing Rock. Smudge Bear, one of these activists, traced his flashlight across the cloudy sky above the Little Creek encampment. “I remember back at Standi...
