Ta'kong, a tattooed Yonkon Naga woman of Myanmar, March 2014. 'Bitu' is the Yonkon word for tattoo and the marks were hand-tapped into the skin by female tattoo artists ('rewbon') who employed lacquer juice ('bumon') as pigment. Photograph by Lars Krutak.

Done in stages: the facial tattoo of this Yindu Dai Chin woman was completed in different phases over more than 2 years. She is 35 years old and I took her portrait during my last exploration of the Chin hills earlier this year.

It's one of my latest portraits on Chin Woman with traditional facial tattoos. The woman's complete face was tattooed in a single session when she was 15 years old.

Bloodfaces - Burma's Chin Women Tattoos

On my last exploration tour through the Chin mountains in January 2014, I came across this Hmoye-Chin women. Not much is known about this group and I believe I was the first to ever capture this traditional facial tattoo pattern back in 2005 - and publish it in 2007 in my book "Bloodfaces - Through the Lens: Chin Women of Myanmar" (page 20). The recent portrait was done for a new photo series I started work on. More up-dates to follow.
