"According to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, out of three million visitors to Myanmar in 2018, over 300,000 were Chinese. Over 200,000 Chinese visitors entered the country through April this year, so the number of Chinese tourist arrivals is expected to rise 94 percent in 2019, said U Hla Myint, director of international and regional cooperation at the ministry."

Bids will be accepted for a project to set up two tourism zones in Mandalay Region to serve foreign visitors, said U Myat Thu, chair of the Tourism Development Committee.

Myanmar tackles zero-dollar trap

So-called zero-dollar tourism is starting to upset the travel industry in Myanmar.

While local tour operators and to some extent hotel owners welcome the increase in Chinese tour groups they wonder why the financial benefits slip through their fingers.

Myanmar Times in a report, earlier this week, claims Chinese nationals are now controlling the entire travel process from bookings, flights, hotels and tour arrangements.

Funds stay offshore while the industry recognises the zero-dollar tour model that once plagued Thailand has arrived in Myanmar.

Visitors wanting to enjoy the night life in Mandalay may be disappointed with what the city offers. Unlike Yangon, Mandalay has very limited options when it comes to night time entertainment and drinking as the city does not have pubs and bars. However, just because there are no beer stations, it does not mean that the city is not alive at night. The night life in Mandalay is quite unique, especially when compared to other cities. Instead, Mandalay has satire and puppets. The city has its own version of the 'West End' with the Moustache Brothers, who combine comedy, tradition and political commentary. Theatre arts are also represented at night thanks to the Mandalay Marionettes. The absence of pubs does not mean the absence of beer, which can still be enjoyed in the city with some restaurants serving both local and foreign beer.

My recent decision to visit Myanmar was a controversial one. Although I received numerous positive messages from foreigners and locals who were grateful that I showcased the beautiful parts of Myanmar, including the culture, people, and scenery, I also heard my fair share of condemnation and critici
