The Gulf of Mottama (former name: Martaban) is a unique habitat that provides for thousands of migratory waterbirds and fishes. Three major rivers those are the Sittaung, Than Lwin (source of Salween), and Yangon rivers supply the gulf with sediment and nutrients that feed into large tidal mudflats. The funnel-shaped geomorphology of the Gulf of Mottama and its major rivers makes a special habitat for shorebirds with numerous food sources of benthos organisms. The tidal cycle is extremely pronounced in speed and amplitude causing a powerful tidal bore phenomenon.
