Equus przewalskii is known as Takhi in Mongolia. Gobi Desert was the last place in the world where Takhi was found. In the last 50 years, there have been no new reports of wild Takhi. It has been deemed extinct in the wild. Since the species was discovered and reported to the Western world in the 19th century, many Takhi were captured and sent to zoos in Europe and North America.
In 1992, reintroduction trials were conducted. Jan and Inge Bouman from the Netherlands initiated this program with Mongolia's government. Approximately 100 km west-southwest of the capital is Hustai National Park, where the horses were taken. It has a total area of 500 square kilometres.
Every group has one adult male horse, known in Mongolian as Azarga. In English, Azarga is represented by Stallion and his numerous females and offspring. In Hustai, 80% of the horses are born between May and June. The foals, or newborn horses, can be spotted even from a distance. Green grass covers the slopes on which they are found.
The reintroduction of 16 horses began in 1992. The event was followed by four more reintroductions every two years, the last of which took place in 2000. In all, 84 Takhis have been imported to Hustai. In total, there are 356 Takhi in the Hustai National Park. Approximately 25% of the foals at the National Park were eaten by wild Mongolian wolves (Canis lupus chanco).
Mongolia is situated in the middle of Siberian forests and Central Asian deserts and steppes. In Hustai, you'll find a wide range of natural ecosystems. A Mongolian steppe is dominated by grasses and sedges. In addition to the wild Takhi, marals (Mongolian red deer, Cervus elaphus) also live in this park. The most common animal in Hustai was the marmot (Siberian marmots, Marmota sibilica).

Yoliin Am is the narrow canyon of a river that flows through 2815 meters high Zuun Saikhan Mountain. The gorge has sheer rock walls with a height of about 200 meters in the central part. It has been protected since 1965 and has an area of 70 square kilometers. Today it is one of the Strictly Protected Areas of Mongolia. The rain that falls at the summit of the mountain flows down into the sheer canyon forming four waterfalls. There are several hundred meters distances between the waterfalls. Yoliin Am is famous for its high & narrow canyons, frozen summer stream and wildlife such as bearded eagles, wild Argali sheep, ibex, and Mongolian mice. The stream remains frozen even in July, the hottest month of the year. There is a small museum of the Gobi Three Beauties National Park at the entrance of Yoliin Am.
