Travelling in Mauritania is sometimes like travelling in a Time Machine, you're taken through an endless journey of the past events, cars, habits, and philosophies.

This retired Land Rover has rested in Ouadane, last time seen moving was last year. May you rest in a well deserved peace.

As you travel anywhere, please always remember to support these people. They completely rely on generous visitors to help.

In Mauritania, most prices are negotiable so don't be offended or under the thought of being ripped off just because what you hear doesn't make sense to you. It's a culture in here to try to make more of any buyer but also people mostly will be happy to sell with the minimum benefit possible. But as you remember to negotiate, don't forget that not everything's worth negotiating. If it's making their day and still doesn't make a huge difference for your budget, just say YES.

Personally as a guide, I always encourage visitors to buy or to at least take a look of what these people have to offer. Sometimes they're just there in the middle of nowhere praying and hoping to see someone passing by. They're not always keen to sell you things, but sometimes also they just want to have quick chit-chat over whatever.

In fairness, most locals, whom I meet on the road selling stuff, think that I'm empowered to push visitors to buy, but while I try to be neutral and transparent, writing and telling these words is the most I can do.

في ظل تفاهة المحتوى الذي شاهدنا في هذا الرمضان، اريد ان انتهز الفرصة لاشارك معكم معلومات هامة عن شنقيطي، معلومات قد تفيد الباحثين في تاريخ البلد و مكانتها،

هل تعلم،
أن شنقيط هي المدينة الرمز لموريتانيا، وهي مهد حضاري وانساني حسب له ألف حساب؟

هل تعلم،
ان شنقيطي هي المدينة السابعة في الإسلام السني نظرا لما زخرت/تزخر به من مكتبات، ومؤلفات وعلماء، وتاريخ، ومحاظر؟

هل تعلم،
انه قديما اذا توفي عالم من علماء شنقيطي فمثله مثل ان مكتبة قد احترقت او تلفت نظرا لما كان يحفظه هذا العالم من متون وفنون وتاريخ؟

هل تعلم،
ان شنقيط كانت مركزا للتبادل الثقافي، و التجاري بين القوافل التي من كل حدب و صوب وأن آلاف القوافل والبشر مروا من هناك ومنهم من استقر؟

هل تعلم،
ان شنقيط تأسست في القرن الثاني هجري، وأن اول مرحلة كانت فوق الرمال واصبحت اليوم مغطاة بالرمال تماما؟ وانه جاءت هناك مرحلة ثانية شبه مهجورة الآن بسبب الرمال الزاحفة وان المرحلة الثالثة تأسست مع مجيئ المستعمر الفرنسي بداية القرن العشرين ميلادي؟

هل تعلم
انه في مدينة شنقيطي الأولى كانت هناك قرابة ثلاثين مسجدا، لم يعد مرئيا منها الآن الا واحد؟

هل تعلم،
ان شنقيطي كانت ولازالت قبلة لمتعلمي العربية و الباحثين عن الإسلام الصحيح، حيث لم تجرفهم العولمة؟

هل تعلم،
انه في شنقيطي الآن أثنى عشر مكتبة، تنشط منها حوالي ثلاثة او اربعة والباقي يتهددها الضياع والنسيان؟

هل تعلم،
ان المكتبات في شنقيطي هي ملك للعائلات، وأن امين المكتبة يجب أن يكون رجلا، ومتفرغا وأن يكون ذا مستوى من العلم و الحرص؟

وأخيرا، هل تعلم أن شنقيط تم تصنيفها كجزء من التراث العالمي من قبل اليونسكو نظرا لما تحفظه من علم، و ثقافة، وتراث متميز؟

قبل المدن و المعاصرة والسيارات و السرعة، كانت هناك مدن مثل شنقيطي هي التي مهدت الطريق للبشرية ونورتها و عبدت لهم السبيل حتى وصلنا إلى ما وصلنا اليه اليوم.

نحن كموريتانيين يحق لنا الفخر كل الفخر بشنقيطي مدينة الإشعاع، والعلم، و الحفظ، و القداسة.
