Van egy vöröslő erőd a Mellieha Bay felett, amelyet messziről kiszúr magának az ember, és egyszerűen kíváncsi lesz, mi is ez pontosan, milyen is lehet közelebbről. Megmutatom most nektek ezt, a Vörös-tornyot, vagy ahogy hivatalosan hívják, a Szent Ágota-tornyot.

A tornyot 1647-ben Lascaris nagymester építtette, hogy a Málta és Gozo közötti szorost megfigyelés alatt tudják tartani, illetve Comino szigetére is rálátást biztosítson. A tornyot Szent Ágotának ajánlották, innen ered a hivatalos neve, és egy kis kápolnát is emeltek a toronyban a szent képével. Bár Szent Ágota nem kötődik szorosan Máltához, a döntést olasz hatásnak köszönhetjük.

A messziről jóval nagyobbnak tűnő négyzet alaprajzú, négytornyos erőd a lovagok idejében nagyjából ötven ember kényelmes elszállásolását biztosította. A tetőn a védelmi funkció biztosítására öt ágyú is helyet kapott. A bejáratot ma egy fa hídon keresztül közelíthetjük meg a műútról, de korábban valószínűleg itt egy felvonható híd állt. Az épület körül egy kisebb zöldövezetben sétálhatunk, illetve ha valaki autóval látogat el ide, akkor egy néhány férőhelyes parkoló is kialakításra került.

A falakon körbe lehet sétálni, amennyiben nyitva találjuk az erődöt, és amolyan 360 fokos panorámában gyönyörködhetünk. Ellátni az egyik oldalán tényleg Gozo partvidékéig, a másikon pedig Mellieha és Ghadir térségét fedezhetjük fel madártávlatból.

Aki szívesen túrázik, az Máltán jól fogja érezni magát. Vezet egy túraútvonal Cirkewwa-tól a Vörös-torony érintésével Mellieha Beach-ig, amelyet mi is bejártunk, érdemes bár ajánlott a nagyobb mennyiségű víz és túrabakancs még téli időpontban is. Ha kevésbé megeröltető kirándulást választanánk, akkor Mellieha Bay-től sétáljunk el ideáig, ezt végig műúton megtehetjük, illetve a Vörös-toronytól továbbhaladva pár száz méteren belül – szint egyenesben – elérjük az egykori radar állomást, amely Málta legmagasabb pontján van állítólag.

Seek immediate medical attention if shock or breathing difficulties occur.

1️⃣ CAREFULLY WASH WITH SEAWATER, DO NOT RUB

2️⃣ IF AVAILABLE, APPLY FOR FIVE MINUTES A BAKING SODA SLURRY (50% commercial baking soda; 50% seawater) to prevent further envenomation from attached tentacles.

3️⃣ USE A PLASTIC CARD TO REMOVE RESIDUALS OF TENTACLES. Scrape in one direction only.

4️⃣ APPLY ICE PACKS (wrapped in a cloth or thin towel, not directly on the skin) for 5-15 minutes - Warn victim that ice pack may be uncomfortable at first!

5️⃣ REASSESS PAIN AND REAPPLY ICE PACKS IF NECESSARY

6️⃣ IF PAIN PERSISTS, CONSULT YOUR PHARMACIST OR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS – Ask for analgesic + hydrocortisone preparations (eg. lidocaine 3-4% + hydrocortisone)

You will walk through the bustling streets and to Barracca Gardens for a breathtaking panorama of the Grand Harbour.
