MAURITIUS WELCOMES FIRST WAVE OF TOURISTS AFTER LIFTING QUARANTINE RESTRICTIONS

The Republic of Mauritius officially reopened its borders today, as it lifted restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers. From today, visitors will be able to freely explore the paradise island’s beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and lagoons from the moment they land.

Mauritius has implemented one of the most successful Covid responses in the world, with 83 percent of its adult population now double-vaccinated. The paradise island is now seeing huge demand from international travelers who are choosing Mauritius for its stunning scenery, safety and security.

There were joyous celebrations at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam international airport this morning, as the first planeloads of tourists touched down. Deputy Prime Minister Steven Obeegadoo, who was there to greet the new arrivals, said: “This is a great day for Mauritius, and we are delighted to be able to welcome tourists back to our beautiful nation. Our global best practice strategy of vaccinating our citizens first before reopening has meant we can lift restrictions today with confidence.

“Tourism is crucial to our economy, but so is the safety and security of our citizens, and it is thanks to our world-leading response to the coronavirus pandemic that we are able to reopen our borders today as planned.

“Mauritius responded quickly and effectively to the threat of Covid-19 right at the start of the pandemic. By implementing an early lockdown and strict quarantine measures we were able to keep infection rates incredibly low and, by prioritizing the vaccination of our tourism workers alongside healthcare staff, we were able to put our phased reopening in place right on schedule.”

Nilen Vencadasmy, chairman of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), said: “Tourism accounts for more than 25 percent of our nation’s GDP and employs many thousands of people directly and indirectly, so we are extremely pleased to welcome visitors to our shores at the start of our busiest season. It was vital that we
implement strict health protocols to protect our citizens, and we remain vigilant in maintaining all necessary safeguards to protect visitors and the local population.

“I’m sure that all of our hard-working staff tourism industry professionals will be so pleased to see holidaymakers visiting our country once again.”

Hotel and airline bookings for Mauritius have soared in recent weeks, and additional international flights have been added to keep up with demand. Many major airlines from around the world fly to Mauritius, including British Airways, Emirates, Air France, South African Airways, Air Austral, Air Seychelles, Turkish Airlines, Kenya Airways, Edelweiss, Austrian Airlines, and Mauritius’s flagship carrier Air Mauritius.

MAURITIUS REACHES VACCINATION TARGET

The Republic of Mauritius has reached its vaccination target of 60 percent of the total population, one month ahead of schedule.

This milestone comes ahead of two major steps to reduce restrictions on inbound international travel. Between now and end of September vaccinated travellers will be required to spend just seven days in a ‘resort bubble’ hotel instead of 14 days initially.

Reaching this milestone allows Mauritius to progress to the second phase of reopening on 1st October whilst maintaining the public health first approach that has guided its pandemic response from the start. From 1st October, restrictions on arrivals will be lifted completely as long as vaccinated travellers can provide a negative PCR test taken a maximum of 72 hours before arriving in
Mauritius.

Unvaccinated travellers will still be subject to a mandatory in room stay for 14 days until 31st Dec 2021.

Nilen Vencadasmy, Chairman of MTPA, said: ‘MTPA is delighted and deeply proud that Mauritius has reached its vaccination target ahead of schedule. This is a fantastic achievement by society and government.

‘Mauritius’ vaccination programme has been fundamental to allowing the country to reopen to international travel, to get tourism up and running again. This milestone means that we can proceed to the final stage of our border reopening, when we will remove all quarantine restrictions for vaccinated travellers, whilst continuing to put public health first – our guiding principle from the very start’.

Mauritius is on the cusp of its summer season. This is the perfect time of year to enjoy Mauritius’ world-renowned beaches, as well as other outdoor activities including hiking, kite surfing and various other water sports.

MAURITIUS EASES OUT TRAVEL PROTOCOL FOR VACCINATED TRAVELLERS AS FROM 1ST SEPTEMBER 2021

With the successful vaccination rollout, travel protocols for vaccinated travellers are being further relaxed. As from 1st September, vaccinated guests would spend only 7 days in a special ‘resort bubble’ hotel before going out to discover more of the Indian Ocean paradise.

The percentage of vaccinated people are as follows:

First dose/total population: 63%
Fully vaccinated/total population: 56%

Arvind Bundhun, Director of MTPA, said: “This is a major leap towards the full reopening of its borders on 1st October, when vaccinated international travellers will be welcomed in without restrictions. Visitors who present a negative PCR test taken in the 72 hours prior to embarkation will be able to explore the island freely from the moment they arrive”.

The Mauritian government took the decision in January to prioritise tourism workers and hotel staff in the vaccine rollout to ensure visitors will be welcomed into a safe and secure environment in Mauritius.

Airline capacity from Europe and the Middle East is currently provided by Air Mauritius, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Air France, Kenya Airways and British Airways.

MAURITIUS RESUMES ITS VACCINATION CAMPAIGN

Mauritius resumed its vaccination campaign today after a temporary suspension when the country was placed in temporary confinement on 09 March 2021. This measure as well as restrictions to enter the country were announced for until 25 March 2021 to prevent further transmissions Covid-19 after some cases were detected in the community.

In a press conference yesterday 14 March 2021, Hon. Steven OBEEGADOO, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister Housing and Land Use Planning and Minister of Tourism, announced that the vaccination programme was devised by government in collaboration with the private sector. The aim is to continue vaccination while adhering to protocols in place for preventing further transmissions of the virus. Front-liners required to be on duty, including employees from government institutions and some 50 private sector companies will get the jab during the first stage of the campaign.

Fourteen public vaccination centres have been set up around the island for the purpose. A number of private clinics will also be offering vaccination services.

The Minister added that employers will be responsible to book appointments and organise commutes to vaccination centres in order to avoid large public gatherings. The first batch of front-liners being vaccinated include doctors, nurses, policemen, scavengers, and employees of the retail sector.

Vaccination of front-liners is expected to be completed by the beginning of April following which the campaign will be extended to the broader population. The Minister said that the objective is to vaccinate more than 60% of the population. This is the threshold recommended by the World Health Organisation for the population to achieve herd immunity.

Since the campaign started in Mauritius, more than 50,000 persons have been vaccinated. Most of them are employees of the travel and tourism sector as the government has placed a high priority on the prompt restart of tourism which is a pillar of the national economy.
