Desert lions in Planet Earth III

BBC’s well known landmark tv-series Planet Earth is featuring the Desert Lions once again!

Planet Earth III, the final season of the trilogy, premiers this month in the UK. And the first episode ‘Coasts’ highlights the remarkable night time hunting behaviour of two Desert lions along the Skeleton Coast of Namibia.

The famous BBC series highlights the most extraordinary, rare and phenomenal animal behaviour in different biomes and habitats across the globe, and with the Desert lions having featured in each one of the seasons, it’s evident just how unique and special Namibia’s desert-adapted lions are.

Viewers may well remember Planet Earth I, which features Desert lioness “Xpl-10” The Queen and her small cubs amongst the dunes of the Northern Namib back in 2006.

Ten years later, the same lioness featured in Planet Earth II, this time with her two grown daughters and the famous “Five Musketeers” - cooperatively hunting giraffe in the relentless desert.

And now seven years on, the third generation of the same Floodplain Pride stars in Planet Earth III. Two of the three orphaned sisters, Alpha and Bravo, who have made the Skeleton Coast their home, take to the stage for their unique night time marine bird hunting behaviour.

It is truly astonishing that the Desert lions appear in all three of the Planet Earth shows, thereby highlighting the remarkable life story of one incredible Desert lion pride over three generations.

Soon Planet Earth III will broadcast all over the world. And when you’ve watched the Desert lion scene, stay tuned for more to come… Next year we will bring out the full, true life story of these incredible ‘coastal lions’…

Say hello to Monika, the courageous and resilient female elephant from the Huab region. 🐘

Born alongside her companion Hage, Monika's arrival brought hope and joy, and she was named after the First Lady of Namibia. 🇳🇦

Unfortunately, Monika's mother, named 'O1,' died naturally in May 2020. She was very old and spent her last days alone with Monika.

Elephants demonstrate love, friendship, and care for each other during difficult times, and thankfully a day after the loss, Monika found solace in the warm embrace of her herd, H2, also known as Rosy's Herd.

She was then adopted by the herd's matriarch, Cassiopeia, and Monika has since been thriving. ❤️

Although heart-wrenching, we believe Monika's loss will shape her into a wonderful leader in the future, armed with wisdom and strength. 🐘

To adopt Monika, please go to the link in our bio and select "Adopt An Elephant" or email [email protected]

Cultural Fact💡The iconic red, orange skin colour that Himba women are known for is gotten through the daily application of Otjize; which is a mixture of ground ochre and butter fat. The red ochre mixture is believed to protect them from the sun, while the Himba also say it's an aesthetic appeal that's considered a beauty standard.

If you are looking for a cultural site to visit in Namibia, we suggest you head over to Twyfelfontein in the Kunene Region. The rock engravings site there dates back to almost 6000 years ago, and provides insights to the San and other ethnic groups that inhabited the area. Twyfelfontein was declared a UNESCO World Heritage because it contains the largest concentration of rock petroglyphs in Africa 🧐

Contact us today to customize your tour with us to include a trip to the Twyfelfontein World Heritage Site Site.
