This building was the shop of Mr Jimmy at Labourdonnais. It was also known as "La boutik Madam", as his wife mostly served the customers in the 1990s. The shop was closed in the early 2000s, after the inhabitants left the village to live elsewhere. The souvenirs are still fresh in my mind. I used to buy ice-cream and other stuff, after school at the shop. Inside one of Trianon's laborers camps. This location is designated as national heritage. Indentured laborers from the Trianon sugar estates have been in these camps for a long time. The Trianon sugar estates was founded in 1803, several decades before Indian indentured laborers arrived. It halted operations in 1958, and the Margarine Industries incorporated it. The camps were actually divided in half. As a result, the available living space was extremely limited. Some families consisted of multiple persons who slept in the same portion of the camp. According to reports, individuals continued to live in these camps after the Trianon sugar factory was closed. To discover more about the remaining old sugar mill chimneys in Mauritius, visit the National Library and asked for my photobook. The Villebague House, or "Château de Villebague".

In 1759, Réné Magon de la Villebague ended his mandate and bought the estate. There was already a sugar mill since 1745. The first sugar mill in Mauritius, in partnership with Mahé de Labourdonnais as well.

After Réné Magon de Villebague bought the estate in 1759, he built the house. Later, his heirs sold it to Napoleon Savy in 1841 , who renamed the estate as Rosalie, which was also his wife's name. Today, we differentiate between Grande Rosalie and Villebague, but before, it was one estate. I must add that Petite Rosalie also had a sugar mill, but demolished since a long time ago. Now, only the ruin of Grande Rosalie sugar mill remains. Visit my blog: letsdiscovermauritius.com/blog

Asile Forest Nature Trail. Asile Forest should not be confused with Powder Mill Forest. When the British conquered Mauritius from Cap-Malheureux, they walked to Port-Louis via Powder Mill and Asile Forest. Adrien D'Epinay owned the Asile sugar factory, which was located in Asile Forest. There is also a windmill ruin in the sugarcane fields. The Krishnanand Seva Ashram was constructed on the same location as the Asile sugar mill after it was razed.
