Subsix, the world’s first underwater music club opens at NIYAMA by Per AQUUM, Maldives

Subsix, the world’s first underwater music club opens at NIYAMA by Per AQUUM, Maldives

Located 500 metres offshore and appearing to float on the surface of the ocean, Edge the overwater restaurant and Subsix, the world’s first underwater music club, are now open. Accessible only by boat, Edge and Subsix complete the gastronomic experience at NIYAMA, Per AQUUM’s newest resort in the Maldives.

To celebrate the opening of Subsix, Per AQUUM has teamed up with global superstars, Tinie Tempah and Poet Name Life to host two exclusive performances this October 2012. Fresh from his live performance with Jessie J and Taio Cruz at the Closing Ceremonies of the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games two-time BRIT Awards and MOBO Award winner, Tinie Tempah will perform for the first time in the Maldives alongside long time Per AQUUM Music Ambassador, two-time GRAMMY® nominated and US Billboard #8 Dance/ Electronic artist, Poet Name Life.

Access to Subsix is via a staircase from Edge taking guests six metres below the surface of the Indian Ocean to a breath-taking underwater world. Guests will find themselves in an intimate music club with floor to ceiling windows surrounding three sides of the structure. A bar and DJ consul can be found along the back wall while seating is spaced throughout allowing unobstructed views of clown fish, manta rays, parrot fish and other exotic marine life.

At Subsix guests sip on cocktails and Champagne while the sounds of NIYAMA Live’s Resident DJs pulsate through the Bose surround sound system. The Resident DJs have all been recognised for their work internationally. Some through legendary clubs such as Zouk in Singapore, others host their own radio shows in the United States or spin at red carpet events such as London Fashion Week. The NIYAMA Live program rotates its DJs regularly to ensure a constant movement of music and styles.

The underwater structure of Subsix was constructed on land and then submerged in place after thorough environmental surveys and impact assessments had been carried out. Continuing on from Per AQUUM’s successful coral regeneration initiative at sister property, Huvafen Fushi, a similar program has been implemented at NIYAMA to establish a long term aim of promoting coral growth and re-colonisation, as well as to enhance and preserve the reef around Subsix for future generations. Headed by Resident Marine Biologist, Luke Gordon, guests can also participate in the program which offers them the opportunity to adopt a coral and to gain a better understanding about these ‘rainforests of the sea’.

Not to be overshadowed by Subsix, Edge, the over water restaurant is helmed by Chef de Cuisine Arron Rhodes who brings modern day cuisine to our shores. By experimenting with flavours, textures and memory, it is an educational experience. Inspired by his travels around the Indian Ocean, Southern India and South East Asia, each dish at Edge will feed the curiosity of even the most trained foodie. Signature dishes that guests can look forward to include, the slowly cooked Indian Ocean Cuttlefish with avocado, piccalilli, apple and ink krupuk, a succulent dish infused with sensational flavours from around the region or the thinly sliced Maldivian reef fish gravalax, mouth-wateringly updated with an accompaniment of tamarind cream, bulgur wheat, curry bubbles and mung sprouts.

In addition to the restaurant, guests can enjoy a drink at Edge Bar. Perched over water and offering incredible sunset views, this is the perfect location for pre-dinner drinks or an after-dinner digestif.

Neil Palmer, Chief Executive Officer of Per AQUUM comments, “In keeping with Per AQUUM’s continual ‘world firsts’, the launch of Subsix and Edge emphasizes our commitment to break boundaries, design icons and embrace imagination to create reality”.

With 86 Studios and Pavilions, NIYAMA is a gastronomic adventure with all day dining Epicure, stunning views for great cocktails from the rooftop at Fahrenheit, beach lounging at Dune, international gourmet take away at The Deli, campfire dining at Tribal, modern day cuisine in an over-water setting at Edge, the world’s first underwater music club Subsix and endless destination dining options. NIYAMA is also home to Per AQUUM’s flagship LIME Spa with private garden sanctuaries, over-water treatment rooms, Quench the juice bar and PUMP the 24 hour gym. Active at NIYAMA is led by remote control boats and buggies, sports simulators, Xbox and PS3 pods; all ideal for keeping kids and adults entertained. PADI dive courses and numerous water
sports are available at FLOAT. A Marine Biology lab for coral rehabilitation and education, The Lair for books, magazines and DVDs and traditional sailing Dhonis are all part of the experience at NIYAMA.

17/07/2011

Maldivian government has announced that they will be renaming the Malé International Airport to Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, from July 26th onwards. July 26th is celebrated as the official Independence Day of Maldives.

The Airport was constructed during the Presidency of Ibrahim Nasir, and was initially named Hulhulé Airport. The airport was renamed to Malé International Airport in November 11th, 1981 by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.

“The Cabinet decided to rename the Airport because the airport began with former President Ibrahim Nasir,” Transport Minister of Maldives Adil Saleem said.

Ibrahim Nasir was sworn in as the first President of the Republic of Maldives on 11th November 1968. He is widely credited with modernising the long isolated and nearly unknown Maldives and opening them up to the rest of the world.

His foremost achievements included that of bringing the Maldives to the United Nations even with the opposition of some nations that felt awkward at including a nation of such a small size. He laid the foundations of the nation by modernising the fisheries industry with mechanized vessels and starting the tourism industry.

He was credited with many other improvements such as introducing an English-based modern curriculum to government-run schools. He brought television and radio to the country with formation of Television Maldives and Radio Maldives, now MNBCOne and Rajje Radio, for broadcasting radio signals nationwide.

He abolished Vaaru, a tax on the people living on islands outside Malé, as well as many other taxes on various imports to the country, some of which have been since re-instated.

When Nasir relinquished power Maldives was debt-free to the international community, and corruption was effectively under control. Under his watch, the national shipping line, with more than 40 ships that were plying the oceans of the world, remained a source of national pride for Maldivians. It was a remarkable success story among the maritime nations of South Asia.

Nasir is considered as the independence hero of the Maldives. He brought about the independence of the Maldives from being a protectorate of the British Empire.

Famous Danish actress, musician and reality TV personality, Brigitte Nielsen has revealed that the Maldives is her favourite holiday destination in the world.

The Danish star confessed that every year she takes a vacation and travels to the luxury resort island of Huvafen Fushi.

While describing her experience she said that the destination is “spectacular” and that guests are always fully catered for. Brigitte said there is nowhere else in the world that she could relax enough to sleep for 16 hours a day.

She also noted that during her holidays, she does nothing more than relax and read, enjoying the beautiful scenery and the warm Indian Ocean.

“It’s very simply stuff,” Brigitte said. “It’s all about getting accustomed to yourself and it takes probably three or four days to unwind. Then it becomes beautiful and you don’t want to leave. It’s a great experience.”

Maldives, A Model for Sustainable Tourism

During the past years, the tourism industry of Maldives has proved to be extremely successful. The quick pace of its development has gained the country numerous awards and unmatched popularity. In fact Maldives has been used by experts in the industry as an example.

In an article written by a Chartered Marketer and Senior Lecturer of Open University in Sri Lanka, Nalin Abeysekera, he states that the tourism industry of Sri Lanka could benefit from the example of countries such as Maldives.

“Tourism in the Maldives is the largest industry for the country. It is always the practice of travelling for pleasure and the business of providing tours and services in Maldives. There was a nice story behind this as well. Back in the 1960s a UN report said that none of the 1,100 islands were suitable for tourism,” Nalin wrote.

He goes on to describe the superior development of Maldives despite the initial UN reports. He also explains why Maldives is considered a model for sustainable tourism.

“Today, Maldives is synonymous with terms such as luxury getaway, paradise on earth, lavish holiday, et al, and the United Nations holds the country as a ‘model for sustainable tourism’,” he wrote.

He further explains how the tourism industry in Maldives started in the 1970s with just two resorts with a capacity of about 280 beds in Kurumba Village and Bandos.

“Today, more than 500,000 tourists visit the Maldives each year. The most important factor is the way the country is targeting the tourists from the counties like China,” Nalin wrote.

Using the tourism statistics of Maldives he showed the increasing number of tourists to Maldives and how it has developed the industry.

“The Maldives received more than 65,000 Chinese tourists in the first five months of this year, a 56.7 percent increase over the same period of 2010, according to the latest figures. Numbers from the Maldivian tourism authorities illustrate that the number of Chinese tourists to the Maldives accounted for 16.6 percent of the total foreign tourists from January to May, ranking top of foreign visitors, followed by Italy with 47,900 tourists, Britain, Germany and France,” Nalin concludes.

Though Nalin has just taken Maldives as an example, he proves a very important point. Our geography, our cultural heritage, our unmatched beauty, and our unique place in nature are not the only things that make Maldives the perfect destination. Our superb hospitality and service is merely an add-on to the strategically planned idea of sharing our special country with the rest of the world.
