The Jacaranda School for Orphans, located outside of Limbe, Malawi, was founded by Marie Da Silva. The school and its supporting foundation are named after the jacaranda tree, a tree that blossomed outside the hospital window of Marie’s father who died in 1997. To Marie, the jacaranda tree symbolizes life, growth and hope, important symbols for our students who are rooted at the Jacaranda School a

nd flourish with its academic, enrichment and vocational opportunities. In 2002, while working as a nanny in the U.S., Marie learned that the school in her hometown was going to close. She urged her mother to let the students gather and learn in their family home using Marie’s financial support from abroad. Marie wanted to provide the most vulnerable children, children who have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS, with a quality education and all the supportive services they need to thrive. In 2008, Marie was named a CNN Hero, an award given to “everyday people doing extraordinary things to change the world.”

Its been a great week for Jacaranda School hosting our friends from New Hampshire. Our children collaborated with them in different programs and were taught by experts in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering , Cyanotype Printing and Business Management. This collaboration has brought together international visitors thereby fostering global connections through shared language of art, shaping a path of growth and opportunity. Special thanks to our Friends Yaz Spazz and Amber-Nicole Cannan for making this trip possible. Chevalier! What an honour - French Ambassador to South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi, H.E David Martinon bestowed to Luc Deschamps the 'Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite' award (Knight of National Order of Merit) for his work as Executive Director of Jacaranda Foundation and as France Honorary Consul in Blantyre. "Love, compassion, generosity", were words the Ambassador used when talking about Jacaranda School. Merci!
Very grateful to all in 'Team France' who traveled from South Africa and France for the occasion. Thank you also to Malawi Deputy Minister of Education Hon Nancy Chaola Mdooko, MP who graced the occasion. As well as Counselor Gerald Lipikwe; Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Director of Europe Quent Kalichero; Chairman of Jacaranda Foundation Isaac Nsamala; and so many friends.
Triple celebration that night as legendary film maker Charles Shemu Joyah became Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) for his pioneering work as trail brazer of Malawi cinema - and spoke eloquently about the process of creating scripts, developing characters and writing dialogues. And we also celebrated the opening of Alliance Francaise de Blantyre, the metamorphosis of Jacaranda Cultural Center and Maison de la France. What a night!

That's what Jacaranda is all about.
It's not only about our school and our programs.
It's about reaching out to our communities.
Making dreams come true.

The mission of Sounds of Malawi at our center, is to promote our artists in Malawi.
To showcase the talents of the artists first here in Malawi and to promote then abroad too.
And it's not just about the well known or successful artists alone,
but it's the local talents sometimes unheard of.
The Kasambwe Brothers are street artists.

When our friends Harlan and Randi Steinberger from Hen House Studios in Los Angeles met them here in Malawi, they worked towards getting them to MASS MoCa to perform and record them in one of the best in the World studios in the USA. https://www.facebook.com/studio9porches
Previously, Hen House Studios invited Keturah to Los Angeles to recorded her new album which is now doing very well here in Malawi and abroad.

Thank you Harlan Steinberger, Randi Malkin Steinberger and Luc Deschamps whom together masterminded this adventure for the Kasambwe brothers and yes, this opens the doors for more artists to make these kinds of journeys.
Wishing The Kasambwe Brothers a Memorable experience.
