Turtle Season

loggerhead turtle on beach in Akumal

Turtle season is here once again. From May through October it is turtle season. And Akumal is Mayan for Place of the turtle so this time of year we have more turtles than ever. The mothers lay their nests on the beaches along the Riviera Maya and in about 60 days there are little hatchlings scrambling to the sea. With the life expectancy of a baby turtle to reach adulthood as 1 in 1,000 they need all the help they can get. Below are some suggestions of ways you can help:

- Do not walk on the beach with lit flashlights after 9 p.m.
-Change all light bulbs that face the beach to red- or orange-colored bulbs, or shield them with a screen to reduce glare on the beach.
-Do not approach sea turtles on the beach.
-Stay at least 10 meters (30 feet) away, and do not use flashlights, nor take flash photos, nor use any sort of floodlight that could disturb and disorient the turtles.
-Don’t leave objects (chairs, beach toys) on the beach that may become obstacles for a nesting turtle.
