We met this lovely couple from Spain 🇪🇸 and invited them to come and visit us while we were visiting a ranch in Chiapas Mexico. They have been exploring all the best parts of Mexico these past weeks. We were beyond excited when they said they were booking a bus to visit Guanajuato City before they went back home!

A charro and a vaquero both represent distinct traditions within Mexican and American cowboy culture, respectively. The charro, rooted in Mexican heritage, is known for their elaborate attire, which includes a sombrero, tight-fitting trousers with silver accents, a short jacket, and a wide belt, often part of the traditional “charreada,” a Mexican rodeo involving skilled horseback riding and various equestrian events. Charros uphold a deep connection to Mexican folklore and national pride. In contrast, a vaquero, originating from Spanish colonial times in what is now the southwestern United States, is the precursor to the American cowboy. Vaqueros are more functionally dressed for the practical demands of cattle herding, with influences that helped shape the classic image of the cowboy, including the use of lariats, spurs, and wide-brimmed hats. While both share a history of ranching and horsemanship, charros emphasize cultural and ceremonial traditions, whereas vaqueros are more associated with the pragmatic aspects of cattle ranching.

In the USA they say WHOAAAAA to stop our horses. In Mexico, we say JOOOO (pronounced ho) which never fails to make me giggle a little bit when I am going over the safety with our new riders at the beginning of the ride.
