Visiting Mexico during the “Día de Mu***os” (day of the dead) celebration is a unique, wonderful, and magical experience that combines ancestral traditions, colorful decorations,
and a festive yet reflective atmosphere.
- Imagine being able to do it on horseback -
Here is a brief description of what you could experience with our original Día de Mu***os / Catrina Ride 2024 program
(Oct.26 – Nov 03 2024)
Traveling on horseback along the ancient Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, which traverses some of the main colonial cities in central Mexico, such as San Miguel de Allende, Dolores Hidalgo, the central highlands, and Guanajuato, is a deeply moving experience that transports you to another era and connects you with the historical and cultural essence of Mexico.
Riding through the “Camino Real de Tierra Adentro” (a World Heritage Site), starting from Atotonilco in San Miguel de Allende with its colonial architecture and cobblestone streets, is like opening a history book. The fresh morning air, the sound of horse hooves echoing in the alleys, awaken a sense of adventure and reverence for the past.
This 8 days, five-day horseback journey includes visits to magical towns, with their colorful houses and labyrinthine streets, creating a breathtaking spectacle. World Heritage cities, with legends of heroes and love stories, seem to come to life around you.
Doing this horseback trip during the celebrations will make you feel like part of a historical procession on a journey to the past.
A unique horseback trip through a historic path with a landscape that opens up with hills and golden fields, a radiant sun illuminating the trails, and each step of the horse that seems to mark the rhythm of an ancient melody. You will feel the presence of history in every corner of the towns visited, adorned with decorations alluding to the Día de Mu***os celebration.
This horseback journey is not just a physical tour but an emotional journey through history, culture, and nature, where the path winds through deserts, cactus valleys, forests, mountains, magical towns, and heritage cities.
Each step of our Aztec & Criollo horses connects you with those who walked these paths before you. It is a journey of adventure, filled with joy but also introspection and appreciation, where each town, each landscape, and each moment allows you to feel the weight and beauty of Mexican history.
The connection with the noble animal that will carry you adds a layer of authenticity and companionship to this wonderful experience.
- The Magic of the Camino Real
Traveling this ancient Camino Real is to immerse yourself in the magic of the past and the grandeur of the present. It is an experience that awakens the adventurous spirit, fills the heart with gratitude, and leaves an indelible mark on the soul. That is why on August 1, 2010, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) added this route as a World Heritage Site.
- Festive Atmosphere and Decorations
From the end of October, the streets of all the towns we will pass through transform into a sea of colors. Skulls and Catrinas, decorated with vibrant and picturesque costumes, adorn the plazas and alleys. Altars filled with marigolds, candles, photographs, and offerings occupy prominent places in homes, shops, and public spaces.
- Processions and Cultural Events
The processions and parades are an impressive visual spectacle. The traditional “Callejoneada” of the souls, where people walk through the narrow alleys of the city, guided by the light of candles and accompanied by mariachi music and student bands, creates a unique and moving atmosphere. Additionally, there are dance performances, street theater, and art exhibitions related to the festivity.
- Altars and Gastronomy
The altars, one of the most important traditions of Día de Mu***os, can be found in all the places we will visit. The gastronomic offerings during the celebrations are irresistible. You can enjoy freshly baked pan de mu**to, tamales, atole, and other traditional delicacies that are part of the offerings. Markets and plazas offer a variety of typical dishes that reflect Mexico's rich culinary culture.
Experiencing this celebration with us, in addition to traveling by horseback for five days along a historic path, is to immerse yourself in a tradition that honors life and death in a unique and moving way, leaving a lasting impression and deep respect for Mexican traditions.
