MEXICO AND ITS ORIGINAL TERRITORY.

Under the Empire of Agustín de Iturbide, Mexico had its greatest territorial extension, gaining the voluntary annexations of other provinces.

Provinces that did not depend militarily on the Viceroyalty of New Spain (although they did depend politically), such as Guatemala and Central America, requested their adhesion to the new Mexican Empire.

To the north, New Mexico, Alta California, Texas, Arizona, and Nuevo León achieved their independence and, as political dependencies of the late Viceroyalty of New Spain, joined the Empire.

Yucatán and Chiapas also declared their independence and later requested their annexation. By the end of 1822, the Flag of the three guarantees was already flying from Costa Rica in the south, to the enormous territory that includes an imaginary line between Alta California and the Mississippi River.
