September 13th is the Mexican commemoration of the "Day of the Children Heroes", (día de los niños héroes, in Spanish), also known as "the Day of the Battle of Chapultepec", (día de la batalla de Chapultepec in Spanish). This day honors six young Mexican military cadets who died defending Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City during the Mexican-American War in 1847.
Chapultepec Castle is a historic building of high symbolic value for Mexicans, whose construction began in 1785. Originally, it was created as a rest house, however, through time, it was adapted to its different uses: it was a military school, imperial residence with Maximilian and Carlota (1864-1867), presidential residence and, since 1939, it is the seat of the National Museum of History.
