Master craftsmanship on display at a traditional pottery workshop in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca. The intricate designs and unique techniques used by these artisans are a true testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region.
San Bartolo Coyotepec is a town located in the Mexican state of Oaxaca and is renowned for its black pottery. Pottery making is a traditional craft passed on through generations in the town. The town is also famous for the "barro negro" or black pottery, which is made by mixing fine clay with small pieces of volcanic rock, and then polished to a smooth finish. This technique gives the pottery a unique shiny and smooth surface and makes it resistant to water. Visitors to the town can witness the pottery-making process, which involves digging the clay, shaping it, decorating and firing it in a kiln. San Bartolo Coyotepec is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in traditional crafts and culture.

Here, sopes are made by hand; sopes are a variant on the traditional tortilla that tends to be thicker, and has a border all around. While this happens, an older lady walks around carrying a wireless speaker and singing Mexican folk songs.
