Altar of death elements:

Many people make altars or β€œofrendas” (offerings) in their homes to honor their loved ones who have died. Every ofrenda also includes the four elements: water, wind, earth and fire. Water is left in a pitcher so the spirits can quench their thirst. Papel picado, or traditional paper banners, represent the wind. Earth is represented by food, especially bread. Candles are often left in the form of a cross to represent the cardinal directions, so the spirits can find their way. Every state in Mexico has its own particular way of setting up their ofrendas. In some regions, you can find a flat surface with all the elements on it, while in others you can find several levels. The most common ones have three levels, which represent heaven, earth, and the underworld. With more elaborate ofrendas, you can find up to seven levels.

Mahahual is a tiny beachfront town that comes to life when cruise ships pull up to its port. The fishing village, part of Grand Costa Maya, is less than two hours from Chetumal and features the largest coral atoll in Mexico.

Located on the southeastern tip of Quintana Roo, the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve makes Mahahual one of the best places for diving in the Mexican Caribbean. The reserve is part of the world’s second-largest barrier reef and is considered something of a submerged cemetery, since the seabed is home to more than 60 sunken ships, including Spanish and English galleons dating back to the 16th and 17th century.

[ Cavern Diving is Amazing ]
Fifteen minutes by car from Bacalar city center, the Cenote Azul offers a once-in-a-lifetime cavern diving experience. At 90 meters or 295 feet, the cenote is one of the deepest in the YucatΓ‘n and boasts stunning illuminated caverns. The site is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and is a must-visit for divers.

[ Bacalar was Sacked by Pirates ]
The town of Bacalar was raided throughout the 17th century, as pirates would enter the lagoon via a canal that is now known as Pirates Canal. Diego de Los Reyes, a famous pirate who was a native of the coastal state of Campeche, devastated the town in 1642. It was not until the completion of San Felipe’s Fort in 1733 that the Spanish crown was able to successfully defend Bacalar.

[ San Felipe’s Fort Offers Amazing Views of the Town ]
Nestling the shores of the lagoon, the Fort of San Felipe offers some of the most spectacular views of the lake. Today it contains a small museum of piracy, including the display of a pirate skeleton that was excavated from the area. The fort and museum are open every day of the week except Monday.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING BACALAR

- THE LAKE HAS 7 TONES
The lengthy, narrow lake is comprised of no less than seven different shades of blue. With its white limestone bottom, the water is famously clear, and is an excellent place for snorkeling and swimming.

- IT IS A "MAGIC TOWN"
Bacalar was named a Pueblo MΓ‘gico or Magic Town by Mexico’s Department of Tourism in 2006. The designation marks the town’s importance as an important landmark that lies outside Mexico’s network of obvious tourist must-sees. There are currently 111 Magic Towns in the country and the certification attracts infrastructure upgrades designed to draw more tourists to the Mexican interior.

- THE AREA ITS FILLED WITH MAYAN RUINS
Bacalar is just a short distance from a wide roster of impressive Mayan ruins. The ancient sites of Kohunlich, Becan, Chicanna, Dzibanche and Chacchoben are all less than two hours away by car. Kohunlich is a particularly large and impressive site and is well worth a day trip from Bacalar.

3 THINGS TO DO IN COSTA MAYA

[ 1.Explore Historic Mayan Ruins ]
Venture beyond Puerto Costa Maya to the most visited Mayan ruins in the area. The well-kept Chacchoben Ruins trace back over 3,000 years of history, a tiny civilization of temples, steps, and a towering ceremonial center.
Climb to the summit of Gran Basamento for sweeping jungle views. As you trace the footsteps of ancient Mayans, you may even spot local spider monkeys swinging from tree to tree. Remember to step carefully and respectfully among the ruins, which are a beloved peek into Mayan life.

[ 2.Scuba Dive the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef ]
The allure of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is well known across the Caribbean. Not only is it one of the world’s best scuba dive sites, but it’s also the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere. A dive in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is one of the best things to do in Costa Maya, whether you’re a novice looking to learn the ropes or a certified diver.
You’ll spot tropical marine life, swim above bright coral, and pass dense mangrove forests as you scuba or snorkel. Look for marine life like bottlenose dolphins, nurse sharks, king crabs, gentle manatees, and sea turtles.

[ 3.Explore Puerto Costa Maya ]
Unveiled back in 2001, Puerto Costa Maya is as much of a destination as the rest of the town surrounding it. Not only does the port contain a variety of immersive experiences the entire family can enjoy, but it also features its own bay for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing.
Head to Aviarus for an unforgettable birding experience, where you’ll discover bird species in their various habitats. After, pop by Kakaw within the port for an interactive look at the rich history of Mexican cocoa. Learn how chocolate is made and, of course, sample a few sweet treats. Discover the distillery process of how local tequila is made at La Consentida. After a history lesson, enjoy the Mexican pastime of slowly sipping tequila.

Located at the south-eastern tip of the State of Quintana Roo in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve encompasses within over 144,866 ha a mosaic of open water, sea grass beds, mangroves, sand beaches and coral reefs that is considered one of the most outstanding marine sites in the region. Banco Chinchorro is the biggest platform type reef complex system in Mexico and because of its isolated position, it represents well-preserved natural ecosystems.

Ecological Characteristics

Corals characterize the area and form a circular strip made up of coral islets, which constitute the morphological structure of Banco Chinchorro. Due to this coral topography and the irregular submarine topography and orientation, a great diversity of habitats co-exist. Some 95 coral species have been inventoried.

Only 0.4% of the core area of the biosphere reserve is terrestrial and is strongly influenced by the sea. The saline substratum allows only the growth of halophyte or coastal dune vegetation and mangroves. The buffer area comprises the large area of the coral circular strip and a large marine zone to a depth of 60 meters.

Seagrass beds are abundant in the Cayo Norte zone and in the interior lagoon of Cayo Centro, serving as reproduction and breeding refuges of way ecologically and economically important species. In this latter category, the two main species of importance are found: the Caribbean lobster (Panulirus argus) and the conch (Strombus gigas). There are three coral systems: Coyo Norte, Cayo Centro and Cayo Lobos, which form the three core areas.

Established between 1562 and 1599, the Cathedral of San Ildefonso in MΓ©rida is the oldest in America. It is built by Mayans from nearby quarries under the supervision of the Spaniards. They constructed the cathedral over the Mayan ruins of the city of Ichcansiho, called T’ho for short.

This was the only church that was entirely built during the 16th century in America and colonized territory, San Ildefonso is a monument with a clear architectural style from AndalucΓa, a testament on how the colonizers brought not only customs and traditions, but art and architectural knowledge to America.

3 THINGS YOU DIDNT KNOW ABOUT THIS MAYAN TRADITION THAT ITS STILL CELEBRATED:

1- ITS A 3 DAY FESTIVAL
Begins on October 31st when traditionally the souls of the children who have died come and are honored with special offerings like toys, sweets, and candy.
On November 1st, the souls of the adults come and are honored with different offerings like their favorite alcoholic beverages, to***co, and spicy foods.
On the last day, November 2nd a special mass is held for all the souls of the dead, to help them depart back to their resting places with a path of candles.

2- BONE CLEANING IN SOME VILLAGES OF YUCATAN
In the town of Pamuch, the people take it even a step further. They carefully and lovingly clean the bones of the dead each year, with small brushes, and only after 3 years of death. Then they present the bones in a small box like dwelling in the graveyard. The bones are placed inside special handwoven and embroidered white linens.

3- EL PIB – Traditional Food
One of the unique, traditional Maya dishes prepared in the Yucatan on November 1st is β€œMucbipollo” literally meaning β€œburied baked chicken”. A large chicken tamale in the shape of a cake is prepared in banana leaves and cooked in an underground oven called a β€œPib.” The act of cooking the Mucbipollo in an underground oven is very symbolic – akin to burying the dead.

1) Cempasuchil Flowers:
Many beautiful yellow, gold and orange flowers will adorn the altar. These are the cempasuchil flowers and their scent will guide the spirits of the deceased as they return to visit their family. You might also see petals laid out on the ground in a path towards the altar.

2) Copal Incense and a Cross:
Incense and candles are another way to guide the spirits to the altar. Copal is the most commonly used incense and is used to purify the energy of the air around the altar. Some say it also wards off any bad spirits from approaching the altar. Often there will be a cross of some form on the altar and this is a sign of forgiveness.

3) Portrait:
Photos of the deceased are placed on the highest point of the altar. Pictures of saints might also be present as it is they who guide the spirits and help to bring them back during Dia de los Mu***os.
