One of the fastest fish in the world; the Striped Marlin (Kajikia Audax).

As it approaches a bait ball, it already knows with certainty who its next pray will be. Analysing the bait ball and seeing which approach to take, to be precise, and make movement necessary in order to get the kill. Using every muscle in its body, and all its evolutionary traits to be the perfect assassin; Reaching speeds of up to 80 kmh / 50 mph to pierce through its pray effortlessly, and disguising itself with its colors against the ocean’s depth and the light coming into it.

A true show to see these predators in their art of hunting on my last expedition to this magical place! Had the pleasure to share this with a group of incredible people who appreciate the beauty of the freedom these animals represent. And the importance of their protection for a sustainable future!

One of the strength of the Yucatan Peninsula, regarding freediving and diving in general, is the diversity that can be found amoung our dive site: from the beautiful pristine reefs of Banco Chinchorro to the most underground Cenotes, you can literally feel you travel the world within a few hundreds of kilometers.

Today I will highlight one of my favourite type of cenote, in the most famous "light beam style" aesthetic. This particular sinkhole, hidden in the middle of the Jungle, will drop to about 35m deep at the center and up to 60m to the side. The shape is similar to a giant coconut, a big underwater cavern, with a central circular opening at the surface, giving us this perfect lightbeam ray, strong enough to light almost the whole cavern. Around 27m the lightbeam touches the halocline, and particularly the hydrogene sulfide cloud "trapped" in between the upper layer of water (fresh) and the lower one (salty).

It is quite a spectacle! And a really cool spot for UnderWater Photography 🙃

I hope you guys will be able to experience those scenery someday, in the meantime, please let me know what feeling this Photograph triggers in you ;-)

Also please visit to book courses, training and Under Water Photography sessions!

“Shapes of life”

🧜‍♀️ - 📸

It’s been a pretty great start to this years expeditions. Lots of whales and lots of great moments shared with great clients. We had to fight the weather, lots of rain and wind, a little unlike this place for this time of year. But we braved it and were rewarded.

Looking forward to more great days ahead.

One of my best looks yet at the gums of one of my toothy friends. In this Case Nelson, Great White Shark #256 in the MCSI Shark ID book. He was showing Sarah and I his best Jaws impression and then at the last minute decided he was not interested and shot off lol.

Whale Sharks naturally sink, so when they dive they literally just stop swimming and ‘glide’ down through the water. This makes for a very efficient means of travelling, sink down, swim up and so on.

📸 and copy by “Shipwreck Dreams” - my newest fine art addition / As another shark week draws to a close, I wanted to share a different side of sharks through my Fine Art that rarely makes it to the big screen. While I love to see so many people excited about our ocean’s wildlife, I find that shark week tends to highlight the more extreme side of an animal that spends much of its life avoiding people. For the last 30 years, I have been diving in close company with hammerheads, blacktips, whitetips, tigers, and bull sharks. I have had many peaceful shark encounters with nothing but a snorkel and my camera in hand. From the coral reef prowlers to the shipwreck snoopers, every shark has its own unique personality and plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of our ocean’s ecosystems.

That humbling eye-to-eye contact—that extraordinary connection.
My last trip has been undoubtedly the most eye-opening during this photography journey. Our duty as visitors, at a minimum, is to pay back for the environment and value the work and effort of the locals and those who care about these magnificent places.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to hear firsthand from local fishermen in the Baja California/Sea of Cortez area about their struggles and how committed they are to adopting new practices, not only thinking about better livelihoods for themselves and their families but the ocean and the environment. These communities deserve proper recognition for their work and support from every front making any usufruct derived from the sea, including governmental/public/private organizations, tourism (guides, tourists, etc.), and everyone in this value chain.

Summer days! ☀️
Reminiscing on this spectacular encounter I had last year with a juvenile Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus). Warm water, crystal clear visibility, good friends, and an unexpected friendly giant chilling with us for around an hour is about as good as it gets!

It’s all about getting out there; Exploring and expecting the unexpected. 🤙🏻

Although reefs are incredible, I believe there is no comparison to open ocean action. It’s always mindblowing to see so much life in a random spot, with nothing but the endless blue surrounding it. Yet, at that particular moment, there is so much going on.

Now, I love to think how the stuff that I grew up watching on documentaries is right before my eyes. On a front row seat to some of the most raw moments nature can offer. And it’s when I feel most alive. Whenever I’m completely immersed in that moment, and where nothing else matters, but what is happening then and there.

📸 It’s not the camera the tool of the photographer. It is all about light as a raw material.

The air we breath, the water we drink, the food we eat, the weather we enjoy, the fun we have… this is all thanks to our environment 🌏. From huge to tiny, plant to animal, marine to terrestrial, the bottom of our oceans to the atmosphere, every single creature is an essential part of our environment and we should look after them.

This is why everyday should be and we should fight as hard as we could to conserve our and all the amazing ecosystem services Mother Earth provides us 💙

The dance of the hunt. 🌊

As Sea Lions coordinate their attack along with the Striped Marlin off Magdalena Bay, it is easy to loose yourself in the beauty of the movements from both prey and predator. As if they were following a meticulously rehearsed dance, flowing in the same direction. Disregarding anything in their surroundings but each other. Carefully watching every change of direction the other might make. Until, in the blink of an eye, the show ends. Each twist and turn, plus the long journey out into the open ocean, finally paying off for an afternoon snack.

Healthy marine ecosystems are dominated by and other top predators. Unfortunately it has been estimated that since the we humans have fished 9 out 10 of the large sharks and fishes that once roamed our oceans.

Only in fully protected marine reserves one can still in the ocean of the past where sharks and huge fishes were the rule, not the exception. And the Revillagigedo National Park off the Pacific coast of Mexico is definitely one of those sites, we just need many more like 💙

Human jacuzzis 🧼 🦇

Oceanic mantas of the Revillagigedo National Park always welcome scuba divers… for their bubbles! By literally sitting on top of diver’s bubbles, they can enjoy a free spa treatment to get rid of that annoying itchiness produced by remoras and other free hitchhikers. In this mutualistic relationship, the adventurous divers that venture into this isolated oceanic archipelago off the Pacific coast of Mexico, are given some of the best underwater interactions you can have with these gentle ocean giants. A situation for both parties!
Marine reserves work, we just need many more of them 🌊
