The company was initially established by Caleb Bradham in 1893 as Brad's Drink and later renamed Pepsi-Cola in 1898. Later, on June 16, 1903, “Pepsi-Cola” became an official registered trademark. The brand quickly gained popularity with its distinctive cola flavor and marketing initiatives.
Pepsi has consistently showcased its iconic red, white, and blue circular logo, which has become a symbol of refreshment and youthful spirit.

Ladislao Bíró presented the first production of the ballpoint pen at the Budapest International Fair in 1931.
Working with his brother György, a chemist, he developed a new tip consisting of a ball that was free to turn in a socket, and as it turned it would pick up ink from a cartridge and then roll to deposit it on the paper. Bíró patented the invention in Paris in 1938.

Tetris is one of the greatest, most addictive, and most successful games of all time!
Originally programmed by Alexey Pajitnov on June 6th, 1984, for a Soviet-built Elektronika 60 computer, the game was soon ported to the IBM PC, where it spread quickly throughout Moscow and the rest of the USSR. Eventually making its way to Hungary, the game was discovered and various software companies made questionable attempts to license it for sale.

Did you know that Earth Day and the Earth Day logo are registered trademarks in Canada and Jour de la Terre Canada / Earth Day Canada owns copyright to the terms “Earth Day” and “Jour de la Terre”. The logo Jour de la Terre Québec is a registered trademark in Canada and the phrase “Le jour de la terre” is a registered trademark in France owned by Earth Day Canada.
So the use of any of these trademarks for promotional or commercial purposes is strictly prohibited without the written permission of Jour de la Terre Canada / Earth Day Canada.
However, they encourage the use of the Earth Day Canada logo in connection with activities that are organized by environmental non-profits as part of Earth Day and to raise awareness among the public.

What if that sick new meme you just created from a photo you took of your cat is starting to go viral? Should you get it copyrighted to prevent your local politician from using it in their next campaign ad without your permission? No need to panic, because it is almost certainly the case that your meme already has copyright protection.
Of course, the fact that a meme must be independently created is an important distinction between fair use and copyright. You can receive fair use protection for making a meme from someone else’s copyrighted work, but you’ll only receive copyright protection on a meme if it is entirely your own, original work.

We are just a few months away from the start of the 2024 Olympics and in case you didn't know, this creates a world of opportunities for intellectual property and copyrights.
For example, to raise funds, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) sells its broadcast rights to various networks and these rights allow the networks to exclusively show the Games on television, radio, the internet, etc. This practice raises billions of dollars for the IOC and that money is, for the most part, allocated to maintaining the committee, as well as the event itself.
The very value of the copyrights is in displaying these world- class athletes, many of whom rely on sponsors and the use of their likeness to earn a livelihood.

Have you ever wondered how motion pictures began and who was the first to patent this invention? This honor belongs to the inventor Louis Lumière, and with this patent the success story of cinema began.
On 13 February 1895, the brothers August and Louis Lumière applied for a patent in France for an "Appareil servant à l'obtention et à la vision des épreuves chrono-photographiques" Shortly afterwards, they also patented their "Apparatus for the production and demonstration of chrono-photographic images" in Germany and in most European countries as well as in the USA. With the "Kinematograph" the photo had learned to walk; the moving image now conquered the world.

For the first time since 1993, IBM does not lead the list of companies that won patents in the United States for new inventions and innovations. Samsung is the new crown holder with a massive 6,248 patents granted in 2022, while IBM came in second with 4,389.
The change at the top of the patent leaderboard is indicative of a broader transition in innovation away from the United States and towards Asia, says IFI Claims Patent Services, a subsidiary of London-based digital research technology company Digital Science.

Believe it or not, a protective device for storing and transporting a single banana was carefully invented and patented on November 13, 1888, by Robert H. Aiken in San Antonio, Texas.
After the banana is placed in the case, it is packed with straw or other suitable materials to prevent the fruit from being bruised by touching the sides of the case.
This creative case is yet another example of the value many people give to their ideas, no matter how strange they might sound to others.

In recent years, China has topped the chart in 29 out of 36 total fields, including computer technology, electrical machinery, and digital communication. The Chinese government’s focus on innovation led to the nation’s applicants receiving 38% of the 1.6 million patents granted in 2021.

Did you know about Harry Houdini's Diving Suit patent?
It was granted U.S. Patent Number 1,370,316 on March 1, 1921. The suit invention was born due to Houdini's interest in underwater escapes.
The trick to the suit was that it was constructed of two separate parts, with a latch for locking the two parts together in the middle. The diver had to reach this latch, and the two pieces came apart.

The Formula 1 kicks off its 2024 season with a bang, and a slew of trademark protections! Registered individually, each event in the season’s circuit has a protected name and brand image, dissuading any businesses from using it in their advertising. Driver names are also protected, along with teams, which mostly share trademark protection with their parent brands and companies.

Businesses worldwide have to be especially careful when advertising for the NFL’s yearly spectacle. If you are thinking of producing materials regarding the Superbowl, be careful to swap the words “Superbowl” and “Super Sunday” for generics like “the big game.” Also, avoid using the NFL’s logo, along with any team names or logos, as all of this could get you into some legal copyright trouble!
