The vocal communication of orcas is highly developed and is an essential element in facilitating the complex social relationships they maintain.

Like all odontocetes, orcas rely on emitted sounds to navigate, feed, and communicate with each other.

Vocalizations are produced by forcing air through nasal cavity structures and are focused forward through the melon. Most calls are composed of a mixture of high and low frequencies.

Low-frequency sounds propagate in all directions but are primarily directed forward and to the sides, with a fundamental frequency of 250 to 1500 Hz and a harmonic of 10 kHz.

La comunicación vocal de las orcas está muy desarrollada y es un elemento esencial para permitir las complejas relaciones sociales que mantienen.

Como todos los odontocetos, las orcas dependen de los sonidos emitidos para orientarse, alimentarse y comunicarse entre sí.

Las vocalizaciones son producidas al forzar el paso del aire a través de las estructuras de la cavidad nasal y son enfocadas hacia adelante por medio del melón. La mayor parte de los llamados están compuestos de una mezcla de frecuencias altas y bajas.

What are the bumps on a Humpback Whales head?

The dark bumps you see are called tubercles, they are a large hair follicle about the size of your fist that cover their head. Nerves are within the tubercle and a short hair can also protrude from it. Many researchers believe that Humpbacks could be using the tubercles to sense vibrations in the water.
